"Beware potential customers! My experience with Afloorable was a complete nightmare. Despite them presenting as professionals, the end result was a disaster. I had my shower floor done by them, only to find a large puddle accumulating by the drain - an obvious indication of an incorrect pitch. When I brought this to the owner's attention, he promised to rectify the error, urging me to remove the old floor. But, he left me hanging for weeks with a torn-up floor and no follow-up. To add insult to injury, they managed to damage the cable to my heated floors during the tile installation. From their actions, it seems evident that they lack the expertise and finesse required for tiling, possibly being more accustomed to simpler click flooring installations. Even the simple courtesy of cleaning up after a job was overlooked. I provided a dumpster on-site, yet they chose to litter my driveway with their waste. It's heartbreaking to invest $6000 in labor, expecting quality, only to be left with such a subpar result. I implore you, look elsewhere for a genuine tradesman who truly values their work and respects their clients."

You can, in theory, tile your fireplace hearth with most tiles. However just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. For example, it’s much better to use unglazed tiles because glazed tiles are more resistant to cracking under extreme heat. Porcelain is more heat-resistant than ceramic, but you can still design the hearth as you like by putting the most heat-resistant tiles directly under the fire and, if it matches your style, add more decorative tiles further from the center of the fire. 

The difference between floor and wall tiles is that floor tiles generally have higher strength and porosity ratings than wall tiles. Wall tiles are typically weaker and more likely to crack or become damaged under sustained pressure like high foot traffic. 

For this reason, avoid using wall tiles on floors and vice versa.

You can technically install tile over tile, but we don’t suggest it. Installing tile over any surface that isn’t a completely flat and prepared subfloor will result in a shoddy overall job, uneven flooring, tiles that don’t adhere, extra weight, gaps, cracks, and room for moisture and dirt to enter. For the best results, only install new tile on a flat, sanded surface like subflooring or concrete that is prepared for tile.

If you have asbestos tile and would rather tile over it than remove it, or if your existing tile is completely flat and bonded tightly to the floor, you may be able to tile over existing tile. But experts recommend thinking twice before you do.

Glazed ceramic tiles don’t need to be sealed because the glazing already offers some protection against moisture. Unglazed ceramic tiles need to be sealed to keep the porous tile safe from moisture and staining. However, both types of tile can benefit from sealing. Sealant can make the tiles easier to keep clean and offer more resistance to water, spills, and stains.

Grouting hearth tiles is one of the most important steps. It seals the tiles so heat doesn’t transfer under the tiles so easily, which can be dangerous. For this reason, heat-resistant grout is a must. Grout also prevents dust, dirt, and any other material from gathering between your tiles. If this happens and those buildups are flammable, a fire could start between the tiles.
