"Morton Excavation was GREAT! I asked for 2 estimates, one with a small retaining wall, one without. After receiving the estimates, I contacted Morton and asked how soon could they get started? “Next week, and we should be done in a couple days.” They did have to put me off for one day, but they completed the job in 2 days, cleaned up the work area, and did an excellent job. Thanks!!"
"Nick was great to work with. He and his crew did a top notch job going above and beyond what we had needed to be done. I will not hesitate to hire White's Excavation again."
"Did a fine job - basement is dry. Overall an excellent experience. Had one issue with their electrician who didn’t read the plan and installed to the wrong box -"

"When I first called, I was surprised at how quickly they returned my phone call to set up an estimate. He was able to come over the next evening to check out our basement. He was punctual and provided us information about what would need to be done. He stated that he would provide us with an estimate that evening. I waited, but the estimate never came. I called the following week to see the status of the estimate. They stated that they were busy, but I should have it by now and would email it ASAP. After a second week, I called again. They said they would get it to me again. After the third week, I called again and was told the same thing. I gave up at that point and contacted someone else, who will be fixing the basement tomorrow. It's been over a month now and never received an estimate for the work. I understand that it's a busy time of year, but was disappointed to never get the estimate and didn't feel like I should have to pester them for it. "
"Rob did an excellent job repairing the crack in my foundation. He is very knowledgeable about the repair process and conscientious about his work. He was very friendly and a pleasure to work with. I highly recommend him if you have leaks in your foundation."
Basement Waterproofing questions, answered by experts
In most climates, contractors recommend closing your crawl space vents in winter. Keeping them shut protects your crawl space from freezing temperatures, pests, and cool breezes that can lead to chilly floors in your home. However, it's often best to speak with a local crawl space team about your specific design and its relationship to the winter season.
External pressure on the basement wall can cause it to bow inward. Soil, heavy with water saturation, is commonly the main culprit. The soil exerts immense pressure on the wall, causing it to fail, at least partially. This is known as hydrostatic pressure—these situations can occur after rainfall or simply due to regular groundwater presence and may be temporary or more permanent.
The primary downside to crawl space encapsulation is the high cost, which can be several thousand dollars. Additionally, the process can make future repairs more complicated by limiting access to plumbing and electrical wiring within the crawl space. Encapsulation also requires sealing off any vents, which can be a disadvantage for home designs that benefit from the airflow they provide. It's recommended to consult with a crawl space contractor to determine if the benefits outweigh these potential drawbacks for your specific home.
Sandbags are the most common and efficient way to create a flood barrier at home. Some local authorities pass them around to homes before the risk of a flood. Otherwise, you can use flood-proof house materials, like burlap or woven plastic bags, to make sandbags and fill them with sand or cat litter. Make sure that when you stack them, they’re tightly laid on top of each other, creating the effect of a firm wall against accumulating water.
Below-ground shelters are the best in terms of durability, but there is a risk of flooding and obstruction. Modern technology and rigorous construction requirements make above-ground shelters a better option for accessibility, safety, and, usually, your budget. They may not have the same aesthetic appeal, but many of their features make above-ground shelters a better option.
