Southern Maine Masonry

One word: Don't. They replaced the top 6' of our chimney about 7 years ago as well as parging and sealing all of our chimneys and the new chimney is literally falling apart in chunks, the joints are seeping water, and the parging is flaking off. Besides that, while these two jokers were here (and we weren't) our neighbor told us that they were arguing and throwing chunks of concrete at each other. We also found that rather than haul the old chimney pieces away they hid them in the brush beside our lawn. Also, forget about a warrantee. That is B.S.

Paul did an awesome job repairing my Victorian step cap chimneys. Communicated clearly, arrived when he said he would and left the job site clean. Price was very reasonable. I read the review from Mike O. and asked him about it. Apparently, there is another company with the same name in the Portland, Maine area and that review refers to that company. Will definately have him back to do more work on my stone foundation.

These two guys were such clowns! They did a half @ssed job and it got even worse when we called them back to fix it. Our neighbor told us that when we were away that would fight and even throw pieces of old chimney at each other! Instead of cleaning up after themselves they tossed broken pieces of the old chimney into the brush beside our lawn and driveway! It was ridiculous!

I've been in happy tears all day, our limestone fountain, ordered from France, looks absolutely incredible thanks to Paul and his fantastic crew at Southern Maine Masonry! They are extremely professional, very kind, and pay attention to every detail. We definitely recommend them! It is viewable at The Garden of Thomas in Harrison, Maine!

The project went very well. I was especially pleased with Paul's attention to detail -- after each day he'd turn off the lights, close the doors, put away tools, and put things back like he found them. It was hard to recognize that any work was even going on.

Paul (Owner) was reliable and performed the work as expected, and within a reasonable time frame. Communication via email was poor, however phone calls and text messages were returned promptly. The quality of his work was high. The only negative I can say was site cleanup was lacking - soot and other masonry debris was left in the area and had to be addressed by the home owner.

Paul and team did an EXCELLENT job. The finished product says it all as two neighbors have already stopped by asking for his business card! They were prompt and courteous, extremely knowledge, and kept us informed of progress. When they were done, everything was cleaned up and I was left with a beautiful driveway area. Very pleased with their work and HIGHLY recommend them.

Brief highlights: they were on time, on budget, worked efficiently, provided good communication and I'm very pleased with the project results. 
They responded promptly to my inquiry and proposed a couple of options with explanations based on their years of experience.  They were absolutely fantastic to work with, gave detailed progress on a daily basis during job and I would definitely hire again for another project.  I expect no problems to surface and I feel confident they'll stand behind their work.
Other positives: high quality work, ease of working with them, understood my budget and time frame, comfortable having them in our house, and answered all questions, offering details to clarify when needed.

Paul was very friendly and easy to work with.  He returned our calls right away and met us to look at the job and provide an estimate right away.  He told us he would be able to fit us into his schedule in the next several weeks and did exactly as promised.  The work was done in a timely fashion and Paul checked in with us to provide us with a summary of the progress and to make sure we were satisfied with everything that was done.  We would have no reason to call anyone else for masonry work in the future - we were very pleased with everything they did for us.

Bottom line up front:  look no further for your masonry needs.  Paul does great work at a reasonable price and will knock it out quickly and efficiently.  If you are not satisfied, he'll come back promptly to make it right.  Very professional, low key, and a genuinely nice guy who is easy to chat to.

Paul Sr is assisted by his son Paul Jr in a family business. 

Only very minor issue I had is one of communication...when you call or e-mail you may get Paul Jr and I'm not sure if all messages get passed along to Paul Sr.    I think Paul Jr handles all the e-mail and Angie's List aspects.  To reach Paul Sr, just text him.  He is responsive.

Paul Sr did the work and after taking off the old stones and mortar, encountered an adhesion problem with the new mortar on the old chimney blocks.  He figured it out and delivered success...which is why he did the work instead of me. 

I did see a couple areas where the mortar may have settled and left a significant gap when it hardened but Paul came right back and filled that before water could get in there.  If left untreated, it may have caused issues during a freeze/thaw cycle.  Paul also fixed an aesthetic issue of placement of cultured stone on flashing to even out the corners.

I'd definitely use him again.

  

The owner of the company was responsive to request for estimate. The waiting time, once contracted, was short. The crew did the work well, quickly, and efficiently. The finishing touches on the steps and with clean-up left a bit to be desired but was easily and quickly remedied.

Paul and his son did an excellent job in my basement. I can successfully report that after most of the 100 inches of snow has melted from this winter, my basement is still dry! I can also rest assured knowing that the brick and stone has added structural support.
Throughout the process, Paul kept me informed on how long the job was taking, and pointed out what they had done so far. There was great transparency throughout. Additionally, they were able to work around the stuff that had accumulated in the basement over time, moving it to the center of the room and then even moving it back! I considered this going above and beyond.
Southern Maine Masonry not only does quality masonry work, but they do everything possible to make sure you are a satisfied customer. I plan on calling Paul again when I am again in need of a quality mason.
