"Everything about Able Electrical Services service was superb! I was in a jam, and Able Electrical Services came to the rescue. Both of the mechanics that assisted were excellent. Russell Ridgway was the primary mechanic and he was amazing! His work is superior and he exceeded my expectations every step of the way. For example, I needed electrical outlets to connect install a wet bar. He measured the wet bar and installed the outlets exactly where they were needed and ensured sufficient power was added to accommodate a kegerator and mini-frigs. I highly recommend Able Electrical Services and hope I never need to use any other electrician."

"Mario’s service was outstanding. Completely professional and walked me through my project from start to finish, including asking questions I had not considered. With an almost 40 year old house and running new electrical lines, Mario finished the job quickly and so clean that you can’t tell the new outlets haven’t been there since the house was built. Highly recommend Mario for your electrical projects."

"I cannot put in words how thankful I am for S&M! To make a long story short, my County Government demanded that my multi-family property be re-wired and brought up to todayâ s code. Iâ ve never needed electrical work done, therefore I searched local Facebook pages and found S&M. During my initial call, Trish thoroughly explained the process and offered to help. I felt comfortable with Trish, therefore took the chance and leaned on S&M to handle this issue. Trish, Ceasar, Kevin and Hugo were extremely helpful and explained all the work that was being conducted. They went above and beyond. They showed up on time every day, were professional, and cleaned before they left. They obtained the needed permits and communicated with the county and their inspectors in order to get the issue resolved in a timely manner. In summary, S&M took control and handled an extremely stressful situation. They had the knowledge, experience and skills to bring my property to todayâ s code. I will highly recommend S&M to anybody who needs electrical work done!"

"Mike is efficient and does a top-notch job. I am happy everyday when I look at my new recessed light in the kitchen and stairwell. The new outlet over the washing machine is perfect and looks fine. The replaced outlets work and look modern. I highly recommend Mike to do your electrical projects."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Smart meters send the readings over a wireless wide area network (WAN) to the power company. This network allows sending small amounts of data slowly over long distances, which is perfect for smart meter readings that occur monthly. If you would prefer a smart meter, contact your power company and consider springing for the cost of replacing your electric meter.

The size of your home will help determine the size of your electrical panel. Usually, the decision comes down to a 100-amp electrical panel versus a 200-amp panel. Smaller homes, especially those without an HVAC system, may be able to get by with a 100-amp panel.

If you have a larger home or need to power AC, a 200-amp panel should be the best fit. It’s unlikely that you’ll need a larger panel than that unless you have a larger home or unique electrical needs, but an electrician can help you make the final call.

Most standard residential water heaters, which are typically around 40 gallons and use 240 volts and between 3,500 and 5,500 watts, require a 30-amp, two-pole circuit breaker. For smaller, point-of-use water heaters using 120 volts and between 1,500 and 3,000 watts, a 30-amp breaker is also often adequate. However, some models may have different needs; units that use more watts than average may require a 40-amp breaker, while smaller units might only need a 20-amp breaker. Newer, tankless, or more energy-efficient models can also require a higher amperage. Having the correct breaker size is crucial for safe and efficient operation, so it's best to consult a licensed electrician to determine the specific needs of your water heater.

You can check if an electrician is licensed in New York by using the online license verification search tool offered by the New York State Education Department. The database is updated daily and gives you the option of searching by license number, contractor name, or the name of the business.

For a 200-amp underground service, you need a minimum of #2/0 American Wire Gauge (AWG) copper or #4/0 AWG aluminum or copper-clad wire. Don’t forget that, at minimum, you’ll need to use a 1 1/2-inch schedule 40 or 80 PVC conduit to successfully run a 200-amp underground service.
