"Kurt was very responsive, highly knowledgeable and honest. He assessed my deck and porches and recommended a course of action that would be cost effective and look good. He was very thorough in answer all my questions and explaining the rationale for his recommendations. I will definitely contact Kurt again for my deck and porch needs. Highly recommend!"

"Highly recommend. CCE staff arrived to give quote for wood deck washing and offer accepted, very fair pricing and promise of outcome. Staff arrived to our house on time and went directly to work, very courteous, high degree of tasking skills, and performed as advertised. We were so very excited about the wonderful restored appearance and physical status of our, prior to this work grayed and dirty deck wood. The staff cleaned EVERY SINGLE SURFACE of the deck, looks like it was just installed. Yes, I will recommend and employ CCE for any future house repair needs."

Customers say: Terrific value

"Vtile did an amazing job replacing the brackets on my deck that were rusty and old. It was a small project but important to me that my deck remained safe for me and my guests. The price was reasonable, they showed up on time, did an excellent job and left the work area spotless! Iâ m a very happy customer!"

"Very nice, professional, and easy to deal with. I had two issues. Before going into issues, I want to say the staff was nice, and easy to chat with and the work seems to be thorough. The guy that power washed my deck took well over an hour. He was slow and methodical. Great to see since prep work is so clear for restaining. When they came to stain the deck, they taped off and made sure to keep the landing clean, etc. So I like the work. In the grand scheme of things, my issues were minor and I am happy with the job. As for issues... First was a lack of communication on scheduling then rain delayed doing the outdoor project. I had to reach out to them rather than receive a message on their plan. A week later, they scheduled a time to power wash the deck but did not confirm when they would come out to apply the stain. They just showed up the next day with no word. I would have liked communications ahead of time about when people would be out. Second, after signing the contract I realized it did not include doing the posts and other main beams under the deck which had been done by the prior contractor. I am on a hill so when you stand in the yard, you can see those posts, etc. I am not talking about the underside of the deck, just the major structural elements are previously done and in a different color. I wish the original quote was more thorough than the others I had received. If I had not caught that, I would have ended up with a 2 tone deck!?!?! They agreed to do it for slightly more cost. Had I known that ahead of time, I may have gone with someone else? Finally, I have to admit, I was unhappy when there was no left over stain for touch ups later. The work looks good, but it does make me wonder, why was there no left over? Did they have exactly enough for 2 full coats? Did they have a little and just use it up going over some areas or did they not really do 2 full? We had discussed having some left over for touch ups, and it seemed odd they had exactly the amount needed... I tried to ask about getting extra for touch ups later, but it was only available by the gallon for $100."

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Although composite decking is extremely durable, it’s also susceptible to extreme heat. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause fading, warping, and cracking. Composite also retains heat more than wood, which makes it dangerous to walk on in the summer. You can help prevent heat damage by only building with composite in shaded areas or using rugs to cover the hottest spots.

You typically don’t need a railing and handrails on a deck that’s less than 30 inches from the ground. However, consider adding them regardless. Railings provide additional safety for you and your guests who use your deck—plus, railings give the deck a more finished look than it would have without them.

In most cases, there should be a small gap between the house and the deck, usually no more than ½ to ¾ of an inch. This space allows water and moisture to flow through instead of pooling against the side of your house. It also lets flashing protect your siding from runoff, which is one of the most common issues with decks.

Any wood deck provides some ventilation to the area below, as is the nature of that type of deck design. However, areas that experience excessive humidity and associated moisture benefit greatly from a dedicated ventilation system in the form of strip vents. This addition helps the various wood boards contract and expand evenly throughout the years and reduces the chances of twisting, warping, and buckling.

While you can use various materials like sand or even just soil, gravel is widely considered the best option to put under a deck. It provides excellent drainage and is resistant to water, fire, and pests. Gravel also helps anchor the soil to prevent erosion during heavy rain and acts as a built-in weed blocker, reducing regular upkeep. Furthermore, it is simple to spread, available in various textures and tones, and adds a polished look that complements any deck design.
