"I hired Romeo's Home Solutions to demolish an old wood shed and erect a metal shed. They arrived on time and began to work immediately. It turned out I ordered the wrong size shed. Romeo's crew went above and beyond to dig a larger foundation for the new shed. I highly recommend their services."

"J. Scott Design's speed of completing a job, their high quality of work, the ability to listen to the customer and truly hearing what they wanted, and a great price was what helped my husband and I to choose them to build our shed. We love our new shed and can't wait to unburden our garage and basement and place those items in an orderly fashion in our new barn style shed. It is a beautiful structure that makes us so happy! Tommy and his crew did a terrific job! We will choose J. Scott Design for other major projects that may come in the future for our home. We have recommended the company to our neighbors and friends."

Pole Barn Builders questions, answered by experts

Whether you should choose a flat roof or a sloped roof depends on your particular situation. Flat roofs tend to be less expensive to install. However, sloped roofs have longer lifespans and stand up better to heavy snow and other inclement weather.

Keep in mind that even a flat roof needs to have a slight slope, usually around 1/2 inch for every foot. If it is completely flat, water will pool and cause damage, either from weight or leakage or rot.

You may need a local building permit and written permission from your homeowner’s association to install a shed, especially if you’re doing any substantial land clearing or installing electricity or plumbing. Permit requirements vary between municipalities, so research the local laws before starting your project. If you hire a contractor to build the shed, they can help determine which permits will be necessary.

The difference between a pole barn and a stick-built barn is in the construction. Large poles in the ground provide support for pole barns. For stick-built barns, 2-by-4 or 2-by-6 lumber (known as sticks) create a frame around load-bearing beams. Stick-built construction is far more popular for residential homes. Pole barns are more cost-effective because they require fewer materials and less labor.

A steel frame costs 10% to 20% more than a wood frame. Wood is a much easier material to work with, more accessible, and generally more affordable than steel—plus, you need specialized tools to work with steel.

It’s much less expensive to build a house with wood. This is because wood is relatively inexpensive, strong enough to endure decades or even centuries of weathering and pressure, and is easier to replace if there are issues. The cost of stone houses are incredibly expensive, heavy, time-consuming to build, and difficult to repair.
