"Calix provided us with excellent and highly skilled carpentry services on multiple occasions. They’ve done several projects for us now, including replacing a bannister on our stairs (which included a new hand rail design), replacing a step on our indoor stairs as well as our gazebo outside, and designing and building a set of built-in shelves and cabinets. Smithwright Home Improvement is a general contracting company providing a broad range of home improvement and home repair services in the Suburban Maryland area. I am a company of one and use subcontractors only when absolutely necessary. 99% of the work I take on is performed by me. Smithwright Home Improvement is licensed with the Maryland Home Improvement Commission since 2004 under license# 89597. I've done mostly flat-fee work under contract with the home owner. Small projects, or handyman related work, bills out at $80/hour with a 3 hour minimum. Angie's List customers receive a 10% discount off labor charges that invoice over $500.00. Discounts do not apply to materials cost which are in addition to labor charges. I do not add any additional costs to materials. You pay what I pay. My business, up to now, has grown strictly through referrals from satisfied customers. In the 20 years since I started this business, I have served hundreds of home owners in this area doing everything from simple drywall work to building large room additions and decks. I pride myself in delivering results that far exceed my customer's expectations. (Please note, the nature of my work can make it quite difficult to take phone calls during the day. The last thing I want is to offend anyone by not picking up or not returning phone calls. Please contact me via text at 410-707-5542 or email at [email protected] as well and I will try to respond to you within 24 to 36 hours. Thank you!).
"My deck was a mess before LeonPro stepped in...so much so, that three (3) other companies turned me down for various reasons (since they only built decks from the ground up and were not in the business of repairing them). For starters, at the lowest point, my deck sits up from the ground about 6 feet, and it has about an 8 - 10 ft. high privacy fence on one face of it. The privacy fence which abuts one side of my house and parallels out about 15 - 16 ft. to the gazebo, which sits atop the deck at its further most point, had separated from the house and was leaning severely outward as a result of storm damage. The support beams were severely bowed as well. It was basically about to cave-in and was posing a real danger (in my opinion). Every time I mowed the grass and had to walk beside it, I was ever so alert to be ready to jump out of the way, just in case it gave suddenly away. That sensation could have just been my imagination, but I wasn't taking any chances. Next, around the base of my deck is covered by ornate lattice made of high grade plastic, basically enclosing the underside and establishing a shed-like structure. The lattice covering was separating at multiple points from the deck structure; also the door to my beautiful gazebo was in need of replacement. Pulling away from the door jam, I literally had to place a piece of plywood over the base of it to keep the squirrels and birds out. It looked a mess and eventually the HOA was going to fine me if I didn't get it fixed timely, and the entire job was too big for me to handle. LeonPro came out, assessed the needed repairs. They not only did the work that was asked to be done, but while they were making the initial repairs they also discovered and pointed out to me some very troubling structural damage occurring to the support posts. This work had to done. Not having it done would have placed my deck in jeopardy of collapsing at some point in time. And although the additional work was not a part of the original price quote (understandably), the agreed upon price was very affordable and very worth it, and the repairs were professionally done. My neighbors and other passers by were so intrigued with the work the LeonPro team was doing that they inquired about the company doing work for them and asked for their business cards. To close, LeonPro was literally a God sent blessing for me. I feel like I have a brand new deck...and mind you its not a small one. I would hire them again in a heartbeat! If you have a job that's too big for the average moonlighting fixer-upper, I would highly recommend that you give LeonPro Services consideration to help you out. J.T., Jr. Owings Mills, Md."
Using concrete footers is the best way to secure a gazebo on a deck without drilling. The weight of the footers is more likely to hold your gazebo in place than other methods. You can also pour concrete into flower pots to create an aesthetically pleasing concrete footer or use concrete columns to make a statement.
To make the gazebo accessible, you can build a wheelchair pathway leading up to it. The path should be paved with a smooth surface for wheelchairs to roll through. A low curb should be placed along each side to ensure the wheelchair stays on the path. At the end of the path, build a wheelchair ramp connecting the gazebo.
For many people, a gazebo is worth it, but it’s a matter of personal preference. If you love spending time outside but your yard doesn’t offer much protection from the sun or rain, then adding a gazebo might be worthwhile. Or, if you enjoy hosting dinner parties and want a nice outdoor space to gather with your friends, a gazebo could be a good investment.
Porticos last 25 to 60 years, depending on the material used. A portico’s roof typically matches the roof of the rest of the home and can be replaced simultaneously. Portico columns have a similar life span if properly maintained and regularly sealed. In some areas, harsh weather and extreme temperatures may cause a portico to wear more quickly.
Several types of porches are available to meet your needs and style preferences. Some common porch types include:
Porticos are essentially a roof over a walkway leading to the home's front entrance.
Sunrooms are closed-in porches that are an extension of the house with glass or plastic panels that allow optimal sunlight.
Wraparound porches extend around the entire home, or at least the front and one side, and offer multiple entrances to the house.
Back porches are an extension of the home’s floor into the outdoors. These offer more protection and privacy than a deck.
