Customers say: True professional

"Being a long distance landlord, embarking on projects like this is sometimes an adventure, and being a fairly small driveway/project makes it all the more difficult, but Billy at O.Coopers made it very easy for myself and my tenants. The estimating process was quick and Billy was very responsive to my questions. On installation day my tenants said the onsite staff was very professional and did a good job keeping the work site clean and respected the property as a whole. Given this was a fairly small project they surprised me with the attention they afforded to the project. Sometimes it is hard to get good service when you have small projects, but O'Cooper surprised me! Yes I would use them again."

"About 10 or 11 years ago, AC Paving installed a new asphalt driveway for us. Our original driveway was gravel and dirt. We were extremely please with the work and the price. The driveway has held up beautifully through the years, but it was looking like it needed sealant and we had a damaged area where water has frozen and thawed over and over. Today, AC Paving showed up at our home. They were in the neighborhood doing work and they remembered us from years ago. They immediately got to work and now we have a lovely, good as new drive. I highly recommend this company. They do good work, they clean up after themselves, and the owner is always on the job with his crew, seeing to every detail. We will always continue to call them when we need their services. Dawne Miller, Upper Marlboro"

"Excellent job!! It was a pleasure working with E. Stanley Asphalt Paving. Joe did the estimate and was my contact and was there with the crew when the job was done. When Joe left during the paving, after having discussed the plan and what was being done, he introduced me to his father who stayed there until the job was done. Before the repaving the driveway was in bad shape and no work had been done on it for over 35 years but it now looks great! This is a top notch multigenerational family business. I highly recommend them."

"Great service, friendly, cooperative & extremely punctual! Beautiful results in a very timely fashion. No mess left behind at all! My driveway was a VERY big & difficult task. It required complete tear down & proper re-doing including all new crushed stone (there was none originally - they just poured a thin layer of asphalt over clay). Will hire them again in the Spring to seal the asphalt."

"Three years ago, and still looks great. They came out for a quote on a weekend. We shook hands in the driveway and scheduled the work. They came as scheduled and on-time. Charged me what they quoted. This is how a business is supposed to work. They did what they said they would do. Period. It was refreshing to work with them. This is so very-very rare in northern va. I met with a lot of companies who quoted me outrageous prices and couldn't answer their phones or email- Couldn't schedule appointments, and just couldn't get out of their own way to run a business. I highly recommend John Donohue Asphalt Paving for any jobs big and small."

"I am very satisfied with the loose fill paving over my back parking lot and the driveway leading back. All grass was removed and edging was done prior to the fill being applied. Also a 4x70 asphalt walkway from my basement door was done very nicely. It’s been about one month and the loose fill is holding very well. The price was very affordable. I recommend this paving company and will be happy to contract with them for future work."

"Capital Paving & Sealcoating re-paved out driveway this week - - it is nearly 200 feet long and wide enough for three cars at the garage. They did an excellent job. They showed up on time, kept us informed every step of the way and truly cared about the quality of the work. They gave us an honest assessment of our driveway and pro's and con's of the options. I highly recommend them - - you won't be disappointed!"

"The crew was professional, on time and did great work. When done I thought we needed to increase the dimensions and they did this with some extra effort because of having to do fresh excavation next to existing tile. Overall a very good to excellent result."

I wasn't sure if I wanted the stamped concrete option verses the pavers when I first started my search so I decided to select a few specialists for both the stamped concrete and the pavers.

I quickly decided against the stamped concrete option. It offered far more patio for the money. Yet, the warranties were the worse of the choices.

Of the remaining choices for the paver patios, Mike's quote was the highest...and to be quite frank, First Impression Hardscape offered the lowest of square footage for the cost of the possible contractors for the job.

Here were the deciding factors for choosing the company that offered a little less patio for a little more money:

*I wanted high quality work over considerable size

*We decided on Nicolock pavers and the Nicolock manufacturer performed extensive screening prior to deeming the company a recommended contractor

*HomeAdvisor also perform extensive background checks and screening and deemed the company a recommended contractor for the job.

*First Impression Hardscapes uses many of the suggested techniques the Nicolock manufacturer suggests as "best practices"...So, we got to watch videos on the Nicolock site and knew exactly what steps would be taking to install our patio prior to the actual installation. It was fun knowing the different stages in advance and watching it play out.

*First Impression Hardscapes' technique was slightly more extensive then the other contractors. Neither of the other possible choices used edge-restraints. FIH also used something a bit better than the usual poly-sand for insect and weed control.

When spending thousands of dollars on a project for the home...of which I have little prior experience with soliciting help...the above mentioned factors played a significant part in my decision!!!

Of course, after any huge purchase decision, a given buyer tends to have a bit of buyer's remorse...Such the case with me...Well, Mike, our primary point of contact, is great with handling buyer's remorse. He's confident about his products and services. Yet, he will let you brainstorm and question EVERYTHING until you've got it out of your system. He endured many many inquiries. He endured so many long-winded emails about the cost, process, color choices. (By the way, I strongly advise against making a color choice from the Nicolock catalog, very deceiving...Best to visit a stone store and see for yourself.

Well, I went to two stone stores...I didn't speak with a representative either time. I found a color I loved at one store...thinking it was the same as the color I saw in the catalog. Then I went to another store, assuming the display was exactly the same and the same color looked awful. So, we left it up to Mike to choose something he thought was suitable to our taste as well as resale value, and...as life would have it, he ended up choosing the original color that we saw and loved at the first stone store we visited.

About the actual process. The pavers were laid perfectly. The guys arrived on time each day. They WORKED!!! Great attention to detail. They clearly knew what they were doing and had some training in "professionalism" as well as the actual job at hand. The clean-up effort was as superb as the actual installation!

They met my expectations...I chose First Impressions because based on the Angie's List reviews as well as the endorsement from highly reputable companies, I felt like I couldn't lose. I felt like I greatly optimized my chances of getting the best quality patio possible by selecting First Impression Hardscapes. The company didn't let me down!!!

My neighbors fell in love with the workers! My neighbors are extremely particular about the upkeep of our cul-de-sac and antennas go up at the thought of anyone getting major work performed to the outside of the properties. Yet, all were pleasantly surprised, and the installation itself, the speed, as well as the clean-up efforts far exceeded their expectations!!! The neighbors are ecstatic!

I think FIH is going to land another sale in my neighborhood very soon!!!

Mike and John...We LOVE your crew!!!! Thanks for everything!!!!

Paving Services questions, answered by experts

Driveways should be sloped with a minimum 2% slope—anything lower will cause precipitation and runoff to collect. A 2% slope is the equivalent of a 2-foot rise over 100 feet. One quick way to check the integrity of your driveway’s slope: no more than four inches of water should collect on the surface longer than 15 minutes after rain.

The stones do not work well on uneven ground. If the stones are not buried into the ground and made level upon installation, they almost certainly will shift or crack on uneven ground. Additionally, rainwater or water from sprinklers can run under the edge of an uneven paver, causing erosion. In a freeze and thaw cycle, trapped water under the paver can cause the problem to worsen by shifting the stepping stones around. Use a bubble level to make sure the ground under each paver is as even as possible, even if the nearby ground is uneven.

Driveway pavers are often worth the cost. Paver types like cobblestone, brick, and concrete are highly durable, and permeable paver options can be tremendously eco-friendly. While you may pay more for a paver driveway, you’ll see great returns from the increased curb appeal and low maintenance compared to other types of driveways.

Box fill refers to the maximum number of conductors that can be contained within a wiring enclosure box, as well as the total volume of the components. Determining the allowable number of conductors in a box requires adding up the number of conductors, clamps, support fittings, devices and equipment, and equipment grounding conductors to make sure you’re within the allowable volume.

Cobblestone driveways can take a major hit on anyone's bank account, begging the question of whether it's worth it to build a cobblestone driveway. Some homeowners might prefer more affordable driveway materials like concrete or pavers, which can give a similar appearance to cobblestone without the high price tag.

Paving your driveway costs between $2,500 and $6,600, to put that in perspective. But for others, there’s nothing quite like the timeless look of cobblestone driveways.
