Offers commercial services

"Todd Willoughby is a very talented architect. We have had the pleasure of working with him to design our custom home in Middleburg, Virginia. Todd is extremely knowledgeable about residential and commercial construction. This is our third custom home, and we have worked with several other architects on various projects through the years. My husband is in commercial construction and has worked with numerous architects in the past forty years. The biggest difference with Todd is that we felt as though he wanted to design the house that WE wanted, not the house that he wanted to design for us. He listened to every suggestion and made every change we recommended to design our home exactly the way we envisioned. His step by step design process allowed us to see our ideas come together. We were able to see whether we were achieving the look we had in mind. Todd gave us very helpful suggestions. He responded to every question and email almost immediately. He told us exactly what to expect and when to expect it. His 3D model was amazing and unbelievably helpful in allowing us to "experience" the sizes of the rooms, windows and many other little details. It gave a perspective that is just not possible to get from a 2D drawing. Todd was even able to put the civil engineer's grading plan on 3D showing the house and property. We have never seen an architect be able to do this. It helped immensely. We could not have been more pleased with Todd Willoughby's skills, knowledge, responsiveness, professionalism and ability to deliver exactly what we wanted by the date promised. His pricing for his services is very competitive and reasonable. He is truly a nice guy. We look forward to working with Todd again in the near future."

"Jose was very easy to work with. He returned my call promptly and came a few days later to get a sense for the work we wanted done. We told him that we wanted to remove some old bushes and a dead tree. He talked to us about what we wanted to replace them with and he had some suggestions on trees that would work for our yard. We showed up our deck and asked about what he could do to help spruce it up. He has extensive work in putting in new decks, but just wanted to do some maintenance for now as we have larger projects on the horizon. He was amicable to what we wanted and offered up a plan to reinforce the deck and tighten up all the railings and the gate. He also laid out the plan to refinish the deck with new stain. Later that night he sent us an estimate for the work he outlined and we were happy with price. We called him the next day and planned for him to come out with his crew on a Saturday morning to start the work.
We asked him to come at 9am and he and his crew were there at 8:45am which was great since we are early risers. His team went right to work pulling out our bushes. My wife and I left him and his team and went off to Home Depot to pick out bushes and our tree. Jose offered to get the bushes and tree for us and include it in his estimate, but we are kinda picky and wanted to do it ourselves. Again he was very receptive to our plans. After we picked out our bushes and tree, we called Jose and he brought his truck up to pick them up for us. By the time we got home about an hour and a half after we left our yard was completely devoid of this giant ugly old bushes. He and his team went right to work planting away. By around noon, his team was done with the planting the new bushes, leveling off some holes in our yard, planting and staking our new tree and was all cleaned up. He had some one in the back power washing our deck and getting that ready for day 2. Once our deck was power washed it had to dry before they could get to it.
His team was back on Monday and did a great job resealing the deck and making it look almost new again. We communicated via text for any questions related to stain colors and what kind of lattice we wanted. He was always very responsive and we always felt that he was right on top of things. The deck needed to dry after Monday so his team came back Tuesday afternoon and finished up the work including adding the lattice, providing a second coat to the deck, adding the deck reinforcing, and tightening up all the railings and gate. His team was all finished and cleaned up by 6pm on Tuesday. For the amount of work they completed it was done fast and efficiently. Overall it was a great experience and we are looking forward to using Jose again for future projects.

Delaware River Jack stone filling in bare dirt areas. Forming a stone bed.
In this project, we transformed a bare dirt area by using Blue Ice stone in the corner. Along the patio border, we added Delaware River Jack to seamlessly connect the entire stone bed around the pool.

"To say it went perfect would be an understatement. We could not be more pleased with the craftmanship, the staff, the materials, and the professional construction we had done from this company. The photos of both bathrooms do not even do it justice because we can't capture the entire room with one photo. We have never had such amazing construction done by any contractor in the 32 years of home ownership, prior to this company. They do it all. Indoor, outdoor, heavy construction, light construction. They had to relocate HVAC ducts, plumbing, electric, and move some walls. They are a one-stop shop!! Prices were extremely reasonable."

"Blackstone is a very professional company and their service and communication is unsurpassed! Eddie was the lead on the project and was very competent. Antonio was the amazing guy that did almost all of the demolition and construction of the bathroom. He was very patient and extremely neat. There are always unknown things that come up with remodeling projects and Antonio addressed them with calm and expertise. He came up with ideas that we didnâ t think of and they were on spot. I highly recommend Blackstone."

Customers say: True professional

"Roberto and his crew were great. We needed a short retaining wall to enclose our new landscaping area in the front of our house. They were meticulous and highly skilled. They also redid a section of flagstone that need re leveled and cleaned up. The price was a bit high but the work quality was also high. I'd hire them again."

"Rick Baumann and his team performed end to end Hardscaping in back yard from design and plans, assistance with HOA submission and follow up calls, assistance in material selection to installation and completion on time and within budget. Rick personally worked with me on all of the above with constant communication during and after the job completion. Baumann's Lawn and Landscape performed as describe and the results are fabulous with every neighbor passing by making comments on the well done job and the professionalism of his team led by a Master Stone Mason, Tony! Many neighbors would stop and watch the work progression by master mason Tony. I am thrilled with the work and plan on having Baumann's Lawn and Landscape back to do more work in the spring. Additionally they perform regularly schedule lawn and landscape care and maintenance for me year round punctually once a week at a very reasonable price. Baumann's has contracted and completed at east two nearby neighbors since the work on my yard was completed.

I highly recommend Baumann's Lawn and Landscape for all your landscaping needs."

Architects questions, answered by experts

Federal architecture is most common in urban areas throughout the New England states, including the older parts of New York, Pennsylvania (namely, Boston and Philadelphia), Maryland, Massachusetts, and Virginia. The style also dominated in parts of Georgia in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, so many historical homes in the area embody this home design. Salem, MA, has two historic districts that predominantly feature this architectural style: Chestnut Street District and the Salem Maritime National Historic Site.

It is technically possible to draw your own blueprints, but the process is extremely involved and really demands help from an expert. A professional architect has an understanding of design elements, interior design, the functionality of different rooms in a home, and how everything from furniture, outlets, and light switches should be laid out to serve you and your family best. Hiring an architect for blueprints can get expensive, but it’s the most responsible way to begin a new construction project. If you’re keen on DIYing, you could consider starting the process and then having a professional take over.

Costs depend on project complexity, software requirements, and the draftsperson’s experience.

Stone, marble, and brick are common building materials of Neoclassical architecture, though you will also find wood flooring and a range of natural stone tiles. Since several home styles fall under Neoclassical architects' umbrella, a range of building materials—including traditional wood framing—will make an appearance.

Open floor plans can come with drawbacks—mainly the lack of privacy and noise dampening. Walls act as an important barrier for traveling sounds, meaning in an open floor plan you could hear your dishwasher running while sitting in your living room. Storage limitations and separation of activities (for example, keeping the kid’s playroom away from the dining room) are other reasons some homeowners are opting out of an open floor plan.
