"I could not be more happy with my new patio. I have been working with this family owned company for 10 years. They have done major landscaping in the past and the most recent project is my new patio. They treat my propety as if it were their own and always do quality work. I do not have to worry about the results when I hire EB Landscaping & Home Improvement, Inc."

"I have my gardens mulched every year and this was the best job ever done. It looks wonderful! The workers arrived on the designated day and were very anxious to please. They did a great job. The neighbors have remarked about noticing the effort these people made and how nice it looks. The mulch was applied several inches deep and will do a great job of controlling weeds throughout the summer. I have already asked them to schedule me for next year."

"I hired DMF to clear and mulch two big slopes on the front of my property. One slope was covered with thick brush. Fred worked closely with me to understand the scope of the work. The crews he assigned to do the work were outstanding in every regard. They did excellent work and always made sure the work site was cleaned up when they left. I highly recommend DMF."

"I hired Baumann's Lawn and Landscape to fix my front lawn. The soil was mostly clay and sand and covered in weeds. They killed and removed all the vegetation, tilled the soil, brought in new topsoil, conditioned/fertilized, and then laid sod. The crew was fast, efficient, polite, and did an amazing job (hopefully this site allows me to upload photos after writing this). The work was done in 3 separate days and took less than 2 weeks from the initial phone call to the finished installation. The price is what you would expect for this level of work and that much sod (sod is not cheap). They're not over-priced but it's not Bob's discount landscaping either. You'll get your money's worth for your project. Baumann's will be my #1 choice for future landscape projects."

Mulch and Topsoil questions, answered by experts

If you’re mulching in the fall, aim to lay down the material right after the first frost, which will vary by climate. Late October and early November are good time ranges to aim for. Try to lay down your mulch after a light rainfall to lock in moisture for root growth through the winter.

Replace organic mulch every one to two years, depending on the variety. Wood chips and straw, for example, will last a couple of years, while grass clippings and pine needles need replacing every several months. Inorganic mulch—such as rock and rubber chips—can stay in place for up to four years, depending on erosion and general garden upkeep.

Mulch is best used in garden beds and yards, not in your driveway as pothole filler. It is meant to stimulate plant growth. Upon repeated pressure, it turns into compost, which also serves as fertilizer for weeds to take over. The roots will then break into your driveway, leading to more material loss and structural collapses.

A light layer of mulch can help protect a tree, retain moisture, and keep the soil healthy. However, it’s important to avoid over-mulching or piling the mulch up around the trunk of a tree, a practice notoriously called “volcano mulching.” That piled mulch can increase the chances of rot and disease on the tree trunk as well as overwhelming the soil, which needs access to a certain amount of air. Topped trees have it hard enough: mulch sparingly while they heal.

You should use mulch because it protects garden soil in a few key ways. This extra layer between the ground and the elements protects against erosion, helps your soil maintain moisture, regulates changes in temperature, adds nutrients as it decomposes, and keeps weeds at bay.
