"Ray Gibbs has been doing home improvement work for me for 13 years. We are always amazed by the range of tasks he's able to tackle and the quality of his workmanship. Ray communicates promptly, runs on schedule, and provides good guidance when you're figuring out how to approach a project. Over the years, Ray has painted the interior of our entire 5000-sf home, upgraded lighting, remodeled a bathroom, upgraded kitchen cabinetry, resealed the front door and replaced all the hardware in the house. His work is excellent, and we highly recommend him."

"Kenny and his team did an exceptional job painting a few rooms and walls in a new house my family and I are moving into. The painting project consisted of 3 rooms and an accent wall. His team arrived promptly and got right to work. Overall, extremely satisfied with the finished product, quality of work, and price. I would consider hiring them again for their services on future projects."

Interior Painting questions, answered by experts

Some methods of removing paint from metal that use physical force, like scraping or grinding, may damage the metal. Other methods like chemical strippers or acids are unlikely to damage the metal underneath, but take care using any method to strip paint to minimize the chance of damage.

Most spray paints are oil-based, meaning you will need a solvent to dissolve them, like paint thinner, lacquer thinner, or acetone. While solvents can be useful in removing paint, they are also very flammable and require the use of a respirator. Beyond that, these products may smear paint and cannot be used on all surfaces.

While not all homes built before 1978 contain lead paint, enough do, so you’ll still want to test to be on the safe side. The federal government banned lead-based paint for homes in 1978, but your state may have banned lead before that time. Around 24% of homes built between 1960 and 1977 contained lead-based paint, while 87% of homes built before 1940 contained lead-based paint.

The biggest issue with painting your interior walls with exterior paint isn’t the way the paint looks or performs—it’s the lack of ventilation. The higher quantities of VOCs in exterior paint will have a harder time dispersing in an enclosed space, so do everything you can to direct them out—like turning on a fan and opening your windows and doors. Afterward, you can simply prime and redo your walls with interior paint, and no one will know the difference.

You do not have to remove lead paint if the surface is not chipping or peeling or if there are no pregnant people or children under the age of six who live in or regularly visit your home. Lead paint is a particular risk for young children whose brains and bodies are not fully developed. Experts strongly recommend that you call a pro to remove lead paint if it’s peeling or flaking, no matter who lives in the home. You can experience lead poisoning by breathing in or ingesting just a small amount of it.
