"Edge Energy has installed solar power system on three houses that I own. In each case, they did an outstanding job. Their crew is experienced and work very hard. They were very careful with my property and involved me in decision making when options were available. If you want the best, go with Edge Energy and SunPower."

"Atlas Home Energy performed an energy audit in my home, and based on the findings corrected all issues over a four day course. Their workmanship is flawless and their employees are pleasant and courteous. The bulk of their charge was reimbursed by BGE and my energy cost has declined. I recommend them highly"

"We were very impressed by Smart Energy Pros. They were originally hired in April to do a home energy audit through BGE, and we liked them so then hired them to do the recommended work of attic insulation, air sealing attic and skylights, and adding insulation to the rim joists in our basement. We mainly worked primarily with Brian to coordinate the work and he was extremely communicative and responsive. He responded faster to all of my emails than my coworkers ever do. The whole process was very smooth, Brian answered all questions and took the time for a longer phone call to go over details with me before proceeding. The team that did the work was very friendly and professional, great to work with. Their work was also excellent and we noticed an immediate difference in our home. Our energy bill has been noticeably lower, and we can tell the hvac system is not working as hard. We did have one small item we asked the team to follow up on and they did so very promptly. The paperwork was very easy and we received copies of everything via Dropbox."

"Bob the owner helped me through the whole process from having the audit done on my home and did the insulation work as well. His crew was also polite and hard working, they got the job done when they said they would and I’m so pleased with the results ! My home is the same temperature on every level and my energy bill is lower then it’s ever been. Thank you Bob and your team I will definitely be referring you to my friends and family."

"They did a nice job putting together an efficiency audit and explaining what they'd like to do.  The price wasn't cheap, but they were flexible in detailing the different pieces of the overall bid.
They were a little persistent about closing the deal, but my wife and I had to prioritize finances elsewhere in our new house.  We intend on refreshing the estimate and doing the work sometime in the near future.

"I was very happy with them. The price was really good this time, it was like a special or something; it was less than normal. Definitely, I would use them again. I started using them in 1976. Well, they are our local energy supplier and they've always done a good job."

Energy Efficiency Auditing questions, answered by experts

When installing a new furnace, it's a good time to consider other projects that can enhance your home's energy efficiency. A great first step is to get a home energy audit, which will identify areas for improvement. Common recommendations include sealing or replacing windows and adding insulation to the attic. These upgrades can help you save money on monthly utility costs. You might also consider installing a smart thermostat to make heating your home more convenient and efficient.

To determine the right size generator for your house, you should calculate the total wattage of the appliances and devices you want to power during an outage. List all essential items, note their start-up wattages, and add them together.

Here are some typical wattage requirements for common appliances:

  • Refrigerator: 600 watts

  • Large dehumidifier: 700 watts

  • Large window air conditioner: 1,400 watts

  • Water heater: 3,000 to 4,500 watts

  • Electric furnace: 5,000 to 25,000 watts

A 7,500-watt generator might be sufficient for essentials like a refrigerator, freezer, well pump, and lighting circuits. However, for high-demand items like a water heater or furnace, a whole-home generator is a better choice. A portable generator may be enough if you only need to power a few critical items.

While home square footage can offer a rough estimate, it is not always a reliable indicator. For reference, here are some typical generator sizes based on square footage:

  • 1,000 sq ft: 6–9 kW

  • 1,500 sq ft: 7–10 kW

  • 2,000 sq ft: 10–14 kW

  • 2,500 sq ft: 12–16 kW

  • 3,000 sq ft: 16–20 kW+

For the most accurate sizing, consult a professional who can calculate your home's peak and average power consumption and recommend the optimal generator.

Motion-sensor lights use one watt while on standby and five watts while turned on. They’re usually on for one hour over a 24-hour period, bringing the total wattage to about 28 watts per day. LED lights use around 6.5 to 8 watts while on. If you leave an LED light on all night, with night ranging from 10 to 14 hours, you’re looking at using 65 to 112 watts a night. You can minimally cut your wattage in half by switching to a motion-sensor light.

Some types of electric fireplaces use more electricity than others. Models that produce 1,500 watts will have more of an effect on your heating bill than 750-watt models.

Electric fireplaces use an average of $1.85 of electricity every eight hours. These minimal operational costs aren’t likely to make a big difference in your electric bill—unless you’re using it as a primary heating source for your home and it’s running most of the time.

Typically, triple-pane windows made with krypton gas filling are the most energy efficient. A window’s frame, glass, design, and installation all affect its energy efficiency. These windows, in particular, are designed highly effectively in terms of their ability to insulate.
