"We contacted Home Deck Inc. for an estimate to build a deck off of the back of our house, where there was currently a small concrete landing and stairs. We also needed a small length of railing built for safety reasons (requested by our insurance company), so that no one could fall in to our basement stairwell. We had someone from Home Deck out to estimate the jobs. When I initially called, he could not come out for a couple of days due to scheduling and sounded very concerned about "losing the job" because of timing. I told him it was not a problem and scheduled for a few days later. The morning of the estimate, he called to reschedule for another day. When we finally were able to connect, he seemed knowledgeable and said we would have a written estimate within a couple of days. When we didn't receive that estimate, I contacted him by email, and he emailed it shortly after. The price was on-par with other estimates that we had gotten for the job but was still more than we had hoped to spend. The only thing we *needed* to have done was the safety railing (the deck was just something we wanted to have done), so I emailed back and asked him how much it would be to just do the safety railing. Another company quoted me about $1200.00, so this was not exactly a *small* job. Nevertheless, Home Deck Inc. never responded to my email. So they lost the job."

"Deck Cetera provided exceptional customer service.  They were prompt in scheduling the appointment, and they were able to get us on the schedule the same week.  They sent Jean to conduct the estimate, she was prompt in arriving to our home and very pleasant.  She answered all of our questions and had tons of pictures to guide us in identifying what we wanted for our deck addition. She was very knowledgable about the different decking materials and helped us in making a decision about deck material.  She was provided an estimate on the spot per our request. Additionally, she followed up with a nice drawing of our project and pricing options relative to different material . Overall this company has exceptioonal customer service, going above and beyond.  Unfortunately we decided to go with another company which provided a price more aligned with what we were planning to spend.

"They did an excellent job, especially cleaning my deck. I liked their work so much that I've hired them to stain my deck. I highly recommend their pressure washing services."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

No, you don't need to stain Ipe decking, although you can if you want to change the color. You will, however, need to apply a UV coating if you don't want the natural color to fade. Speak to a deck staining specialist near you to discuss the best options if you want to stain your decking. And remember that you’ll need to seal your Ipe wood deck annually to protect it from scratches and Mother Nature.

Yes, you can build a deck over your outdoor HVAC unit, but you need to leave at least 5 feet of vertical clearance above the unit. If you don’t want your deck to be that high off the ground, you could build a floating deck in another part of your yard—again, as long as you leave at least 4 feet of horizontal space between the deck and your AC unit.

Generally, a patio is more accessible than a standard deck because patios are constructed at ground level. However, decks can be made accessible by adding a wheelchair-accessible ramp, a vertical lift, or a stair lift along the entry. An ADA-compliant deck ramp costs about $3,000 on average. The additional investment will provide a much friendlier experience for your guests with movement impairments.

Ultimately, overapplication of stain can compromise the deck's appearance, durability, and longevity. It may result in an uneven finish, with excess stain pooling, dripping, or drying into thick patches. It can also obscure the wood's natural grain and texture, detracting from the desired aesthetic. Moreover, excessive staining may not fully penetrate the wood, leading to poor adhesion and premature wear. Additionally, thick layers of stain are prone to peeling, cracking, and blistering as they struggle to bond with the surface.

It is definitely worth sanding a deck to ensure the wood absorbs new stain. Sanding a deck removes the outer layers of aging wood, allowing the stain to penetrate. It also gives a fresh look to the entire surface as part of the deck refinishing process. Without sanding, your stain or sealant is less likely to absorb into the wood. While sanding a deck is a time-intensive project, the rewards are noticeable and long-lasting.
