"Joe and the crew from E Stanley did a great job widening our driveway. The job consisted of three parts. First, dig under the existing driveway and remove the roots that were growing underneath. Second, dig a couple of feet on both sides of our existing driveway to widen it out. Finally, pour asphalt on top of the driveway to replace the old one. Joe came in at the best price and finish the entire job in a single day.."

"Dani, Jose, and the Concreto Plus crew did really nice work. I am very pleased with my new concrete driveway. Concreto Plus gave me an initial estimate and worked with me throughout the process to make sure things went smoothly. They also worked well with the needed county inspectors to ensure the new driveway was in compliance with local regulations."

"This is the second project we hired JP Landscaping for, and I suggest that anyone else looking for landscaping or hardscaping work do the same. We obtained numerous quotes for both projects, and JP was always the most transparent, honest, and cheapest. We could not be happier with everything his team did for us--a retaining wall, patio, and fence. He totally transformed our back yard. He was patient as we worked through what exactly we wanted and our budget. Once we made a decision and he had the materials, his team showed up right away and worked hard. I highly recommend JP Landscaping for anyone's next project."

"Jose and his team at Brothers Pavers, Inc. are true professionals with the highest integrity and a pleasure with whom to work. They beat out the competition with clear communication and reasonable pricing and earned our confidence with careful attention to detail. Jose took great care to explain every element of the project and the team at Brothers Pavers implemented the vision with impressive precision. Brothers Pavers created a beautiful hardscape including a LARGE PATIO, RETAINING/SITTING WALL, and FIRE PIT and -- in addition -- made magic happen in doing a difficult DRIVEWAY REPAIR. This was a big project and the entire team was courteous, timely, and demonstrated an impressive work ethic throughout. The job was finished on time and on budget (and the cleanup after was impeccable). Jose and his team at Brothers Pavers, Inc. are honest, knowledgeable and hard-working. We recommend them highly and look forward to working with them again, soon!! THANK YOU BROTHERS PAVERS!!!!!!!!!!"

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Asphalt is not a type of concrete. While both are a common type of pavement, asphalt is composed of aggregates (like sand and gravel) and bitumen; concrete is a mixture of cement, aggregates, and water. Here are some of the key differences between asphalt and concrete driveways.

An asphalt overlay or top coat costs between $3 and $7 per square foot. For a standard, single-car driveway that’s 10 feet wide and 20 feet long, that’s a total of between $600 and $1,400. For a two-car driveway, you’re looking at a total of between $1,200 and $3,000.

Gravel is the cheapest way to extend a driveway. Gravel is an affordable, practical option that’s easy to install and perfect for DIY projects, helping you save on labor costs. It can be quickly spread and leveled to create extra driveway space without heavy preparation. While gravel doesn’t offer the same durability or finished look as concrete or asphalt, its low cost makes it ideal for budget-conscious homeowners who want a functional solution without overspending.

Yes, it is possible to pave over an existing driveway, but whether it's the right choice depends on several factors. If the underlying structure of your current driveway is still strong, concrete or asphalt resurfacing can be a cost-effective way to prolong its life. However, if your driveway has significant issues like potholes, deep cracks, or other inconsistencies, it is best to remove the old driveway and start from scratch. Key factors to consider include the current driveway's condition, the compatibility of the new material, the added thickness and height, and the necessary surface preparation.

Asphalt and tarmac are not the same thing. Traditional tarmac, short for tarmacadam, uses tar as a binder to hold crushed stone together. Asphalt uses bitumen—a byproduct of crude oil—to bind aggregate. Though tarmac was once a go-to for roads, asphalt has become the modern standard. And these days, most surfaces referred to as “tarmac” are actually asphalt. So, while the names may overlap, the key distinction lies in the binder—tar for tarmac and bitumen for asphalt.
