"They were hired initially to repair the drain field. Shortly thereafter, we discovered I needed a new tank. I don't think a new tank should have cost me $2,500 but at that point into the project, you really have no choice. After checking around, most places sell a new tank between $900-1500. Also, the extra dirt that was not used to refill the holes was left in the center of my yard along with the brick/cinder blocks from the old septic system. He did level off the mound of dirt however, it was a 5 inch mound approximately 10 ft. in diameter in the middle of my yard. I have now been shoveling dirt to try and spread it out evenly over my yard, as well as, removing the old debris. So far, the septic system is still working"

"I had to pay an $85 service call fee (on top of monthly Choice Home Warranty subscription) to have a guy literally look at the outside of the tank and tell me it was just the burner."

"The technician emptied the freezer, which was in the basement, to work on the part that needed repair. Then he neglected to put anything back into the freezer, including a turkey I had bought for Christmas and a rack of ribs. Two days after he left, I went out of town for two weeks. The turkey actually exploded and spewed its liquid all over everything, which had to be discarded. I let AHS know and they couldn't even bother to call me or follow up on this. I'm considering not renewing my contract with them because of the quality (or lack thereof) of many of the providers they send."

It is not normal to smell your septic outside and indicates a problem such as an unsealed manhole or access lid, a clogged septic line, a faulty vent stack, or the need for a septic tank pumping. If sewage is leaking from your septic system, it can be hazardous to you, your family, pets, and the surrounding environment. While a traditional septic tank requires a leach field for wastewater disposal, it is possible to have a septic system without one. Some alternative systems, which are often used when there isn't enough space for a full-size leach field, include mound systems or sand filtration systems. In a conventional setup, the leach field is essential because it's where the wastewater goes after leaving the tank.

Some of the signs that could mean your water is contaminated, such as cloudiness or bubbliness, could also be non-problems that don’t affect your water’s potability. However, if your water smells or tastes strange, it’s a good idea to stop drinking it and test it immediately. If your well water is contaminated, the best way to discover that is to test it.

The pressure in a well pressure tank should be set 2 to 3 PSI below the pump's cut-on pressure. The cut-on pressure is the lower number in the pressure setting (e.g., the '30' in 30/50 PSI) and is the point at which the pump starts. The cut-out pressure is the higher number, where the pump stops.

For example:

  • If your pressure switch is set to 30/50 PSI, the tank pressure should be 27-28 PSI.

  • If your pressure switch is set to 40/60 PSI, the tank pressure should be 38 PSI.

Common pressure settings for household applications include 20/40, 30/50, and 40/60 PSI. The difference between the cut-on and cut-out pressure is typically 20 PSI.

There are a couple of ways you can determine the depth of your well. One method is to use a device called a well sounder. This tool has a long measuring tape containing a sensor to alert you once the end reaches the water. 

Or you can DIY it by using a long tape measure with a half-filled bottle of water attached to it. Lower the tape measure into your well. Once you feel tension on the tape, you’ll know the bottle has reached your static water level. This will give you an approximate idea of your well’s depth.
