"Benito and Julio were fantastic! I was going to try putting up the wallpaper by myself but I got SO nervous that I contacted Angi's list. Julio did the painting and Benito did the wallpaper. I had not touched my kitchen in 20 years and I felt so happy watching them get the job done correctly. I highly recommend R&B Pro Painting!"

"George's painting, inc was responsive and professional from start to finish. The project entailed wallpaper removal from 2.5 bathrooms and kitchen, repainting those rooms; installing a tile backsplash and vinyl tile floor in the kitchen; replacing the kitchen countertop; repairing a cabinet; repairing drywall and painting the ceiling in the master bedroom. The owner came out to do the estimate himself. He was accommodating when I wanted to expand the scope of the initial project and came out a second time to give me an updated estimate. He was easy to reach via cell or email. The estimate was more than fair. His crew completed the job in three days. The crew was polite, professional, and did a good job cleaning up at the end of each work day. I highly recommend this company and would use them again."

"FDC Painting worked with us to ensure that they understood our needs (two in home visits to make sure they had it right). They scheduled us promptly after signing the contract. The team showed up on time and quickly worked through the project. They moved furniture and ensured the floors and furnishings were covered and well protected. Once walls were stripped and repaired, they used quality Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams paints. The house was kept clean and tidy. After the job was completed the owner of FDC followed up to make sure we were happy with his work and to ensure there was nothing else required from him or his team. Results of the job were very good. We would recommend FDC and use them again."

"This home had been vacant for several years and needed a lot of work, including repairing floor damage in the kitchen. I also had them change an old drop tile ceiling in the kitchen to a regular ceiling with a new flush light. After meeting at the home, I got the first estimate a few weeks later, then met Ibrahim in his office. After picking out fixtures, flooring and cabinets and signing the contract he came back to the house a second time to confirm measurements, which I appreciated. The contract had no definite start time but they were able to start in early May and did the bulk of the work that month. Presently waiting for a few small items but as the house is still vacant I have been patient. It should be noted that as I brought other contractors and tradespeople through for separate work they all admired Mega's work and design on the kitchen and bathrooms. One plumber took photos of the bathrooms to send to his girlfriend. Also noted is that when Ibrahim took his vacation there was another Project Manager who was pro active and contacted me to check in and let me know. All the staff were responsive and I have been very pleased as I plan to live in this home."

Each time, Robert and the crew arrived on time.   Once Robert made sure all the furniture was moved and covered to protect it, and the proper paint was on site, he left the crew to do the work.  The crew was very professional and good natured, filling in nail holes and repairing drywall before painting, and then putting everything back in place once finished.   Robert later came back to check the work, and on one occasion, sent one of the crew back to do some minor touch-ups.  I appreciated the willingness of Competitive Painters to work with me on scheduling since removing everything from the apartment was not possible, even though this would have made their job of painting much easier.  Robert also provided suggestions on paint colors, which were spot on.  I would not hesitate to recommend Competitive Painters.

Small jobs welcome

"Since at first there were a number of uncertain factors where only an "allowance" could be made, it took a while for Nick to determine how to shape his bid. (It was finally agreed to specify a price for the two bathrooms but do the kitchen on a "time and materials" basis.) Once the contract was signed, Nicoleta immediately became deeply involved both in design and in supervising the team of highly skilled workers. Not only does she have excellent taste and sense of design, but she also quickly sensed our taste and spent an enormous amount of time working with us on decisions from layout to choice of floor and wall tiles, countertops, light and plumbing fixtures, bathroom hardware and paint colors, and everything in between. She also handled most of the ordering and then dealt with vendors when any problems arose. Not only did Nicoleta have creative ideas, but GSBuilders' skilled team of electricians, carpenters and painters came up with unique solutions to challenging problems such as how to "build in" a microwave oven into a limited existing cabinet space (with appropriate venting) so as to free up counter space. When there were glitches (and I have yet to hear of a renovation project where there were no glitches), Nicoleta and the team quickly responded to ensure that everything was 100% right. Renovation is a disruptive process at best, but everyone from GSBuilders exerted great effort to minimize the disruption and to ensure that things were left as neat as possible at the end of each workday. They were totally reliable and while we were not sad to have our house back to ourselves when the project was completed, we felt very comfortable having them in our home. The project was not cheap. But we deeply appreciated the caring attention and skillful work that went into it and we feel the price was fair and that we got excellent value and made some new friends along the way."

Wallpaper Removal questions, answered by experts

Hiring a professional wallpaper remover is almost always worthwhile. Although the work is more expensive due to labor costs, doing it yourself is extremely time-consuming, complicated, and easy to make mistakes and wreak havoc on your walls, regardless of the tools you use. Professional wallpaper removers have the tools and experience to get old wallpaper down quickly and without damaging the walls behind it.

Limewash can be removed from brick, but the method of removal will depend on how long the limewash has been on the brick. If the limewash has fully dried—which happens after about five days—you’ll need to use a diluted muriatic acid mixture to remove it. If there are multiple coats of limewash, you may need to apply the acid mixture several times to fully remove it from the brick.

Rubbing alcohol may help dissolve stubborn wallpaper adhesive that remains after removal, but be sure to apply it carefully to prevent damaging your walls. Apply a small amount using a cotton swab or pad, then gently scrape or wipe the adhesive away.

Wallpaper lasts an average of around 15 years, but there is some variance. The type of wallpaper matters, as vinyl wallpaper tends to last the longest—sometimes 20 years or more—while a peel-and-stick wallpaper, which is the easiest to install for DIYers, will usually only last for around five years. Exposure to high humidity, smoke, and UV rays from sunlight can also limit the lifespan of your wallpaper, as can heavy traffic in the installation area.

While it is possible to paint over wallpaper, it is generally better to remove it first to guarantee a smooth, professional finish. Painting over wallpaper can save time, but it may lead to issues if not done correctly.

You can paint over existing wallpaper if it is in excellent condition: smooth, non-textured, clean, and firmly adhered to the wall. Ensure there are no bumps, tears, or peeling areas, and that all corners and seams are securely glued down. You might also consider painting over wallpaper if removing it would damage the underlying wall. Additionally, some wallpapers are specifically designed to be paintable, which can add texture to a room.

However, there are risks. If the wallpaper is textured, damaged, or peeling, these imperfections will show through the new paint. The moisture from the paint can also loosen the wallpaper's adhesive, causing it to bubble and potentially damage the wall. To mitigate these issues, clean the surface thoroughly and use an oil-based primer to help the paint adhere and prevent the old adhesive from bleeding through.
