"Was polite and professional but didn't have the tools needed to properly unclog my underground gutter drain which was clogged with roots. Tried a mechanical auger that he had but that was all he could do and only pulled thin roots which helped but didn't completely unclog the drain."

"Patrick showed up on time. Put clean "booties" on his feet. I had a few issues, and didn't know how he was going to quote my issues: 1) clogged bathroom sinks, mysterious water on floor on lower level 2) water pressure. Cut to the chase. He suggested I use a product for the clog; found the water issue, (a/c condensation drain clogged, and need new faucet. He could have quoted 3 different and large sum amounts. he didn't. His integrity was paramount. He showed me everything he was looking at and doing. I was involved in the process understanding WHAT and WHY he did the things that needed to be done or did. The cost was reasonable and fair. HE IS MY PLUMBER!"

He cleaned the clog and left no mess whatsoever. I would highly recommend his business and would seek his help again for another plumbing problem."

"This was an excellent experience, especially because we had to do this in the middle of winter.  Their price was similar to another very good company we interviewed.  Two other HVAC folks came, promised quotes, and never followed through.  GAC was very professional and helpful throughout the whole process.  It's nice to deal with a company whose office staff responds with genuine concern for our situation (we ran out of oil a bit early and they gave us a tip on just using diesel to tie us over to the date of the installation AND they came out to restart the oil furnace properly).  They were the only ones who said that we needed to reposition the AC coil and that the previous set up was obstructing air flow; indeed, after they did this, we can tell a big difference.  We also ran into some unexpected issues, like where to put the furnace condensate line (bc it is a high efficiency furnace) bc we do not have a basement drain, and they had to make an extra trip to come up with a good solution so the line would not freeze outside. Another issue was our thermostat line that required them make an extra trip to install an extra gizmo on the furnace so it could talk to my thermostat upstairs, etc.  So... (1) the installation was done very neatly and efficiently; (2) despite 3 extra trips to the house to address unexpected problems, we were not charged for those; it was just part of the overall package, which GAC honored as their commitment--the issue of extra cost did not even come up.  I appreciated that old fashioned professionalism and commitment to doing things to the customer's satisfaction.  We will use them all our HVAC needs, maintenance, etc and are happy to have found such a great company."

Drain Cleaning questions, answered by experts

With a one-way cleanout, you can access your sewer line from one direction. Depending on the way it curves, a plumber can either access the side of the pipe that goes into your home or the side that goes to your yard. On the other hand, two-way cleanouts allow pros to access both sides of the sewer line, thanks to their dual-pipe design (they’re usually U-shaped).

If you have a sink stopper, it can feel more challenging to clean the drain without removing it, but here are a few simple steps:

  • Pour ½ cup baking soda into the drain using a funnel

  • Pour 1 ½ cups vinegar into the drain

  • Close the sink stopper for 15–20 minutes

  • Open the drain

  • Pour 2 cups of boiling water down the drain (be cautious as boiling water can damage some types of pipes)

If the drain isn’t unclogged, repeat the process.

Pouring drain cleaner down a vent pipe isn’t recommended. First of all, unlike a clog in a sink or bath caused by such material as soap scum build-up, toothpaste, and hair, clogs in a vent pipe are likely the result of debris from trees or even an animal stuck in the pipe. Drain cleaners won’t be able to eat through this kind of material. The cleaner will only become clogged in the vent with the debris, causing even more problems.

If you try a drain snake and various DIY methods for unclogging drains to no avail, bring in a professional plumber to assess the situation. Also, if multiple drains in your home are backing up or you smell sewage, a visit from a plumber is best. You can expect your drain cleaning costs to fall around $250, and this can include an assessment of what’s caught in your plumbing and if there’s a larger, underlying problem. You should also consider calling a pro if you need to snake a toilet, as DIYing this could lead to a cracked fixture.

As with many appliances, proper maintenance is key to maximizing your garbage disposal’s life span. If everyone in your household is on board with proper care and maintenance, like running water while operating the disposal, you should get plenty of years out of your unit. Avoid putting the wrong food items down the disposal, including pasta, rice, bread, and more.
