"Mr. Handyman impressed me with its commitment to excellence. Each worker was
consistently on time, and communication with the company was good. Even though
the work took longer to complete than estimated, the agreed upon price remained
the same. The final result is excellence. I am most impressed with the way the
company stands behind its work. Initially, I was not completely satisfied with
some of the drywall finishing, but I paid the bill. I called Victor. Within two
hours he was at my house?and he was prepared to work. He spent the afternoon
sanding each place I was not satisfied with. He clearly wanted to make me
completely satisfied. He even gave me some coupons toward the next job. So, I
hired Mr. Handyman to paint two rooms. The price was more than fair. Mike
Thompson came to do the painting. He saw places in the drywall that could be
better, so he stopped his painting, went to a local store to buy materials, and
fixed the drywall to perfection. To make up time, he even took our doors home
with him to paint! The final result was excellence: I will call them again for
other projects, and I have recommended them to my neighbor. I know I will be
pleased with the work from Mr. Handyman!

Customers say: Super punctual

"My contractor, Jose Chicas, did an EXCELLENT job for me. He combined about 6 tasks that I needed done into one day. He made 3 trips to my local hardware store for parts and accessories, and installed them professionally and quickly. I definitely RECOMMEND him as an outstanding and competent handyman."

"Home Advisor rating system has a limitation on how to choose the projects, so let me recap here in detail. I found John Betz & Son (Silver Spring MD) through Home Advisor. After several calls to other recommendations, John (himself) was the only one to answer his phone, pull over (he was driving), talk me through all the handyman work I thought I needed (the list grew!), get my information, and set up an appt (all on the side of the road). For our initial walk-thru, he showed up not on time, but Early! He confirmed the type of work I needed, from my other experience with a previous walk-thru. We set up a date/time for the first priority job because it had a deadline -- he showed up early for that appt, and he and son did an excellent job fixing rotting exterior front door wood, and painting (and painted more than was requested too, to make it look seamless!). The other jobs were not an emergency, so we set up 2 days the following week. He again showed up early with his son on BOTH days. They worked all day, both days, on the following: caulking exterior windows, pediments, garage door (and checking exterior for any leaking); re-hanging & securing a shutter; replacing an exterior keypad for my garage door opener and setting up the coding system; replacing/repairing drywall in the garage; fixing kitchen sink (repaired garbage disposal and replaced piping/drainage repair for other sink); replaced a ceramic tile in dining room (and matched grout so perfectly I couldn't tell which tile had been replaced afterwards!); drilled and installed new locks on a living room window; MADE and installed 2 screens for living room windows; repaired threshold wood strip in basement that runs between carpet and tile floor; AND THEN, he checked a vent return that makes periodic noise, and checked behind insulation to be sure no mold/damage was present -- those were no charge :-). John gives a full electronic estimate for his work before it begins, accepts major credit cards (if really necessary), and sends an electronic receipt. During this time, I was able to talk with John and get all my handyman fears put to rest, as he is an expert, and can do work from top to bottom of your house (not just handyman work). I highly recommend John Betz & Son -- my experience was 5-star!!"

Handyman Services questions, answered by experts

While handypeople do not need to be licensed in many places, you should only hire insured pros for any home improvement work. Your handyperson should have active liability coverage that protects them and you in the case of an error or accident. Furthermore, if they have employees on your property, they should also have workers’ compensation insurance. If you hire an individual or a company that is not insured and they damage your property, have an accident while on the job, or become injured on your property without insurance, you can be held financially liable.

Almost all houses require soffits. The exception is in houses where you know without a shadow of a doubt there is adequate airflow throughout the entire house including, and most importantly, the attic. Almost all modern homes have soffits installed whether you notice them or not because on most homes, the roof eave extends beyond the walls of the home, naturally creating soffits.

Many contractors prefer checks because they’re easy to track and have no associated fees. However, many also accept credit cards (though they might add a fee to cover their processing costs).

Aside from a professional light installation company, there are a few other pros who may be able to help you hang Christmas lights. Along with specialty holiday decorators, a handyperson near you can also hang Christmas lights (and can fix that pesky drippy sink while they’re at it). Either way, not all of these pros will offer the service, so be sure to call ahead and get multiple quotes before you hire.

Tipping contractors, builders, or general contractors is not customary or expected. Unlike many service professions where tipping is built into the payment structure, construction professionals typically charge a full rate for their services. However, you may choose to tip a worker for exceptional service, such as if they go above and beyond, stay late to meet a deadline, or work on a holiday weekend. Before offering a tip, it's a good idea to ask about the company's policy, as some prohibit their employees from accepting gratuities. If you want to show your appreciation for a job well done without giving a cash tip, consider writing a positive online review or offering to serve as a reference for potential new customers.
