Small jobs welcome

"After 3 companies on Home Advisor failed to follow through on commitments, I contacted Sean at Base Services. I phoned him on a Monday, he came and did and estimate on Wednesday and the job was completed the following week. He replaced and painted 2 doors in our basement, replaced 4 faucets in our bathrooms and repaired a bifold door upstairs. Sean was professional and respected both our time and our property. He left his work area spotless. The jobs were finished on time as promised. Unlike most service providers on the Eastern Shore, he kept every commitment for phone calls and appointments My husband and I will definitely hire him again for future work at our home."

Painting questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can paint a chain-link fence, but you don’t want to use spray paint. With the spray method, you’ll be losing a majority of your product to the air, given the size of the gaps in chain-link fences. Instead, use a paintbrush for your fence posts and a paint roller for the wire.

Choose based on climate, finish preference (glossy, matte), and durability. Tailored coatings also provide longevity.

If it rains after you paint your fence, you may need to apply another coat of paint after the fence thoroughly dries. This will ensure a good seal if the rain weakened any areas of the paint. However, if your paint had enough time to dry thoroughly before it rained, you should have no problem.

While the answer varies based on weather, 10 a.m. is a good time to start painting. The dew will have dried, meaning there’s no moisture on the house, and the temperature will likely be moderate and the sunlight less direct. Starting mid-morning should also give you enough daylight and pleasant weather to work on the job for several hours.

On most untreated wood fences, there is no need to sand before treating. You typically only need to sand if there’s an old coat of paint or stain on your fence. If you do need to sand off a previous paint or protective coating (like an old stain or sealant), use medium-grit sandpaper.
