Small jobs welcome

"After 3 companies on Home Advisor failed to follow through on commitments, I contacted Sean at Base Services. I phoned him on a Monday, he came and did and estimate on Wednesday and the job was completed the following week. He replaced and painted 2 doors in our basement, replaced 4 faucets in our bathrooms and repaired a bifold door upstairs. Sean was professional and respected both our time and our property. He left his work area spotless. The jobs were finished on time as promised. Unlike most service providers on the Eastern Shore, he kept every commitment for phone calls and appointments My husband and I will definitely hire him again for future work at our home."

Painting questions, answered by experts

You can weather a new wood fence by applying vinegar with steel wool as a way to fade some of the coloring. You may also find it easier to stain your entire fence a new color instead of trying to get newer fence boards to match an older one.

Oxygen bleach uses hydrogen peroxide as a base and won’t harm wood when using it as a cleaner. On the other hand, chlorine bleach breaks down wood at the cellular level and causes irreversible harm. Although you may not see immediate damage to wood after exposing it to chlorine bleach, its strength and integrity are now compromised.

You should inspect the area regularly for rust, clean it with a wire brush, repaint it every few years, and apply a protective sealant to prevent corrosion.

The process of painting or staining a fence typically takes between one and five days. The total duration depends on factors like the size of the fence, weather conditions, and necessary drying times. A significant portion of this time is for drying, as stain won't properly absorb into wet wood. You should wait 24 hours to stain a fence after washing it and allow 12 to 24 hours of drying time between each coat. The active work time is generally about one hour for every 10 to 20 linear feet of fencing.

If you paint a vinyl fence, it will likely stick to it for only a brief amount of time. This is because vinyl is not a porous material, so it's not an ideal surface for holding paint. Initially, paint will stick to your fence, but it will eventually peel off. Applying primer before painting your vinyl fence will help paint last longer. Certain primers are well-suited to vinyl, which means you can paint vinyl siding with the proper preparation.
