"We were very lucky when we found S&M Home Solutions. We had recently moved to Ocean City and needed someone to paint the entire interior of our home. Steve Thrower responded immediately when others did not. He managed to fit us into his schedule and was both punctual and meticulous when it came to the painting work he did for us, and he managed to complete the work ahead of schedule. While we chose the colors, Steve offered helpful suggestions. We found him to be honest and straightforward, easy to work with – a consummate professional. He’s been doing this sort of work for years and it showed. I highly recommend S&M Home Solutions for all your painting needs."

"I use Sunrise Painting several times a year for both my clients I refer them to and for my own properties. He gets my quotes completed quickly and more importantly he gets the projects completed promptly. I also appreciate the owner, Halil, follows up each completion with his own final touch ups and cleanup. I think he and his firm are the best."

"They repaired a deck that had been hit by a large tree top. While gathering estimates for the work I was very pleased to see the level of detail they offered regarding the needed repair. Ultimately, I chose them because they located an issue with the deck that was not picked up by the other contractors. At the end of the project I found their workmanship to be quite good. They were punctual, friendly, and had great ideas with regarding to the repair. I will definitely recommend them to neighbors and friends. In addition, I have already spoken with them about completing other projects at our home."

Painting questions, answered by experts

For the longest-lasting exterior paint, consider acrylic or enamel (oil-based) paints. Acrylic paints, including acrylic latex and acrylic enamel, are known for withstanding harsh weather and sun exposure. Enamel-based paints are also one of the most durable options available. While latex paint is common, it typically has a shorter lifespan than acrylic or oil-based options. The paint's finish also affects its durability; a higher gloss finish is generally more durable. For resistance to moisture and cracking, matte and satin finishes can be effective, while a high-gloss acrylic or oil-based paint offers a combination of maximum longevity and durability.

While the answer varies based on weather, 10 a.m. is a good time to start painting. The dew will have dried, meaning there’s no moisture on the house, and the temperature will likely be moderate and the sunlight less direct. Starting mid-morning should also give you enough daylight and pleasant weather to work on the job for several hours.

Staining or sealing a cedar deck or fence is highly recommended to extend its lifespan and protect it from the elements. While cedar is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, it is not impervious to damage from moisture, sun exposure, splintering, fading, and rot over time. Applying a protective finish creates a shield that preserves the wood's strength and appearance, potentially extending its life by five to 10 years.

When choosing a finish, it's helpful to understand the difference between a sealer and a stain. A sealer sits on top of the wood, whereas a combination stain and sealer soaks into the top layer. Because it penetrates the wood, a stain generally offers better protection against UV damage and rot and lasts significantly longer. For the best results that also preserve the wood's natural color, consider using a near-translucent stain.

To maintain protection, plan on reapplying the stain or sealer every two to three years, either as a DIY project or by hiring a professional.

Regular cleaning, rust-proof coatings, and checking fasteners help prolong the lifespan.

Typically, a fence requires one to two coats of stain. The exact number can vary depending on the porosity of the wood. For specific guidance, it's best to check the manufacturer's instructions. After applying the first coat and letting it dry completely, you can assess the finish. If it appears patchy, uneven, or you want a more saturated color, a second coat is recommended. An extra coat can also help cover lap marks.
