"He just fixed it!! A very nice man. Came, looked at central vacuum determined the problem and fixed it. No sales pitch no telling me how old the machine was and that it would soon need to be replaced. He also checked all filters and said was. Good"

"Although we decided to hold off on this project for awhile, Justin provided excellent advice and provided a timely and complete cost estimate. Other companies provided a cheaper estimate but Justin's was complete and included the system our home needed. We will definitely select Justin and Superior Vacuums to do this project when we are ready."

"Actually S&H sent someone they work with for central vac repair. He was prompt, knowledgeable, pleasant, and had the outlet working again within a half hour. Helped that we were able to get a "new" outlet from across-the-street neighbor who had gotten rid of her system (both systems were part of the original house equipment)."

"C.M.W. provided expert installation of our central vacuum system. Their pricing and value were competitive. The technician, William, who installed our system informed us of all work prior to beginning and left all areas clean upon finishing. We are more than pleased with their service and recommend C.M.W. products and services."

"Jose did a good job in fixing our rental townhouse in Germantown, MD. He fixed the front door which was very hard to close, parts of the door frame were rotten due to water which leaked down to the basement. He did a few other fixes around the house. Great job, reasonable price, dependable, good to work with. Will hire again in the future. -Surja"

Central Vacuum Systems questions, answered by experts

Maintaining your central vacuum cleaner is crucial to extending its lifespan. Ensuring the filter is cleaned or changed often is vital to ensuring clogs don’t impact your motor. In addition, inspecting motor brushes regularly and lubricating the engine when needed helps keep it in tip-top shape. Finally, cleaning the central vacuum hose of dirt and debris helps keep clogs at bay, especially if you’ve vacuumed something wet or sticky.

No. Only the hose or the attachments are portable in a central vacuum system. A portable vacuum is a standalone model like a stick, canister, or upright. A central vacuum system is defined by a central power unit, which is installed in one place like an AC unit, and the connected network of piping to funnel the suction.

It can be difficult to know right away if your central vacuum is clogged since it operates quietly compared to regular vacuums. However, there are a couple of signs you can look for. If you feel like it’s losing suction or isn’t cleaning effectively, then there’s likely a clog somewhere.

Make sure you turn the vacuum on and feel the end of the hose handle. If you don’t feel any suction, then you’re dealing with a clog in the hose. You can see if the clog is further down in the system by attaching the hose to each outlet until you find the one with the least amount of suction.

Before deciding whether or not to install a central vacuum system, consider the pros and cons to determine if it’s right for you.

Pros

  • Increased suction power

  • Improved air quality

  • Reduced noise pollution

  • Longer lifespan than traditional self-contained vacuum units

Cons

  • Higher upfront installation costs

  • Expensive repairs

  • Requires significant storage space

Regular cleaning, sealing, and inspections help identify problems early and maintain aesthetics.
