"I highly recommend using Scott Curtice for any renovation project no matter how complex it is. We bought a house that was over a hundred years old that had not been renovated for decades. Starting from the planning stage, Scott was wonderful about redesigning the house in order to open up the space and bring it into a more modern look. He spent several sessions reworking his plan always taking into account our needs and desires. Once the actual renovation began, we ran into a number of complex structural issues with the house itself. No matter what obstacle came up, Scott and his team were able to find solutions. His team was efficient in their work and they were all always reliable. In fact, many of our neighbors were astounded that all subcontractors worked on the home daily and that they actually were busy the entire time they were at our house. In addition, the lines of communication between ourselves and Scott, as well as his subcontractors, were always open. They kept us abreast of the project's updates and always made suggestions for ways to improve the work for aesthetics and/or cost savings ideas. Scott’s work was beautiful and he and his crew paid attention to every detail. The majority of the house required a gut renovation and it came out exquisite. Even after the job was complete, he was always available for questions. I would highly recommend using them for any job you have."

"My wife and I were looking to have an addition built on our 2 bedroom / 1 bath home back in the winter of 2022. After a phone conversation with Richard, we decided to have him come out to the house. He was very clear with the iCornerstone process, and the benefits of using this process. He is meticulous in measuring and understanding the existing structure. There are no guesstimates and all cost projections are based on the actual materials and labor needed to complete the work. Having such clarity regarding costs before any work begins is not something I've seen in this industry prior to this experience. It was certainly a welcome change. We now have plans for a home addition and complete control over the project. We decide the scope and can customize the plan to our budget. We are grateful to have worked with Richard, and highly recommend him!"

"I live in Belmont, MA and have a two car concrete garage with a large center column. I was interesting in removing the center column to make a single large opening for the garage to make it easier to get in and out with a larger car. I had already hired another structural engineer to do an inspection but their price for drawings felt kind of high. So I looked on Angi and got connected to Berdi Consulting through Pavel, who quoted me a more reasonable amount for the inspection and structural drawings for the garage door steel beam. Pavel's inspection was helpful and informative and he produced the drawings as we agreed on a reasonable timeline. and was able to put me in touch with an iron fabricator. Thanks for a job well done."

"I hired Alan to design a 3rd bedroom addition (first floor, expanded footprint) for my home in Dedham. This was a challenging project in that I was attempting to build close to my neighbors property line. Alan investigated further with the town and learned which specific building materials would be required given my situation. He also gave additional guidance in working with my town along the way. Alan is a good communicator and had great recommendations for my project. He was also easy to work with when there were tweaks or changes requested on my end. Alan was also willing to consult directly with the contractor that I eventually hired for the job to ensure nothing was lost in translation. Even the contractor mentioned a few times that Alan had done a great job with his plans and additional ideas. The room is now complete and is even better that I imagined it would be. I would enthusiastically recommend Alan to anyone in need of an architect."

"After an unusual situation arose at my home, I was concerned about the possibility of structural damage caused by drilling and new construction at an adjacent lot. After receiving a recommendation for Veitas Engineers from a trusted source, I called and scheduled an appointment. I am so thankful that I did. I continue to be impressed with the amount of time that the two engineers spent at my house, closely inspecting the exterior and interior. Within days, I received a 16-page detailed report which included drawings, photographs, recommendations, and action items. I was so pleased when I saw that the action items were categorized as structural and non-structural, that is, that the engineers included items beyond my actual structural concerns. I used the report when working with a contractor to follow up on the recommendations and action items. The contractor was impressed with the quality, clarity, and scope of the report. I am so happy that I chose Veitas Engineers!"

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

Failure to compact the soil during construction is the most common cause of leaning retaining walls. In addition, poor drainage can lead to excessive water pressure behind a retaining wall, pushing against it until it begins to move forward away from the soil it is holding back.

All foundations have footers, including monolithic slabs. In some cases, the foundation itself acts as the footer, as in the case of a floating slab and a monolithic slab. With a monolithic slab, the footers—which are just the bottom-most portion of the foundation that distributes loads down to stable soil—are a part of the main slab and are constructed with a single pour.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.

On average, 6 inches of concrete can hold around 150 pounds per square foot, but the exact weight that 6 inches of concrete can hold depends on factors such as the type of concrete, the reinforcement method, soil conditions below, and structural design. If you’re concerned about the longevity of your concrete patio, walkway, or driveway, hire a professional to help you choose an appropriate concrete thickness and reinforcement method for your needs.

According to the Earthquake Country Alliance—a public and private alliance in California that works to improve earthquake and tsunami readiness—reports that unreinforced masonry, such as stone, bricks, and hollow clay tiles, is more susceptible to earthquake damage. The mortar between bricks isn’t as stable as other building materials and methods.
