"The crew left without finishing the project which admittedly was a large scope of complicated mess left by the previous contractor who had drinking problems, but they knew that coming in. The main thing I asked the folks to do was to make sure heating works, that was priority #1, this is what they left in October when disappeared: - Heating main room, the first floor, only one radiator out of 3 working. - Heating second floor living room - none of the radiators were working, - They spend time running new wire to the first floor radiators because they thought the old wire was nicked, apparently nothing was nicked and the new wire wasn't needed at all as well as three 6" holes that they left in ceilings and walls , one of the original wires were just mis-labled that was the reason why heat didn't work - but instead of double checking they went for brute force - lets rewire the thing and didn't even finish that correctly. - Left one room completely without power to the outlets, to add more to that the switch in that same room was wired, but the wire wasn't screwed in at all, it was just taped to the terminal using electrical tape!!! It was shorting when I was moving it around! This is after the crew of 4 people spend 2 days checking all outlets and switches for code compliance. And then there is a ton of small stuff: - 3 way switch weren't wired correctly - closet light not wired Did I try contacting them? Oh yes, - Left 4 emails, 2 voicemails over the course of 6-7 weeks. What did I get back? One email that someone will contact me shortly... of course no-one did contact me shortly not after 1 day, 3 days, 3 weeks. Why am I leaving 2 starts and not one star ? Because the crew did do a lot and a lot of things they did were fine, like they installed CO2/Smokedetectros throughout the house, installed thermostats everywhere, so for small projects they may be great, but nothing that requires time or patience to figure out more complex electrical problems as I guess there is no money to be made in solving complex problems."

Ceiling Fans questions, answered by experts

There are many types of ceiling fans, from self-automated smart ceiling fans to outdoor ceiling fans that provide additional comfort to your patio. What you choose all comes down to function and personal taste.

Consider your ceiling height when selecting a ceiling fan. Rooms with ceilings under eight feet high will do well with low-profile ceiling fans, also known as flush-mount or hugger ceiling fans. If your home has cathedral ceilings or ceilings between 10 and 25 feet high, you’ll need a large ceiling fan with a heavy-duty motor to get adequate air circulation.

Stainless steel or aluminum fans are long-lasting and have less air resistance. They are best for outdoor use as their durability helps them withstand unpleasant weather conditions. Their heavy weight requires a stronger motor, which leads to more noise than other blade materials.

Wooden fan blades are a classic, durable option. They are much quieter than metal fans and feature a wide range of styles and finishes to choose from. However, they can be damaged by moisture if not covered with plastic.

Plastic fan blades are lightweight, easy to clean, and versatile. There are various shapes and styles to choose from as plastic is easily molded and dyed. They will also deteriorate slower than other materials as they aren’t as susceptible to humidity and moisture.

If you’re replacing an old fixture with a ceiling fan, you usually won’t need a permit, but if your electrician runs new wiring for the fixture, you likely will need a permit. Building permits are necessary in most municipalities if you’re making changes to your electrical system, so even if you have partial wiring run to the area and need new wiring installed for added functionality, you’ll probably need a permit. Your electrician should be able to let you know if you need one, and they’ll typically file the paperwork for you.

To convert a ceiling fan to wireless, you’ll need to install a canopy module to access the lighting and fan controls. Many options are available, all of which help you control specific elements of your ceiling fan, so you have plenty of choices depending on your needs.

Keeping dust off fans can keep them working optimally and help keep dust mites or bacteria from building up. Dust fans weekly with a duster, microfiber cloth, old pillowcase, or vacuum attachment. You can also try spraying a clean fan with a store-bought dust-repellent product or making a DIY dust-repellent with water and a small amount of liquid fabric softener mixed in.
