"Originally hired MJ Masonry to replace an existing railroad tie retaining wall and like most projects there was mission creep. I asked Michael of MJ Masonry if they were interested in taking on 2 additional projects: replacing an old stockade fence with a new one, and replacing a cement walkway with a stone walkway. We agreed on the price of the 2 additions and all projects were completed to the original schedule within 3 weeks of the start date. Details of the projects: 1. Retaining Stone Wall is over 130 linear feet 2. Stockade Fence is approximately 88 linear feet 3. Stone Walkway is approximately 63 square feet The workers lead by Jose are consummate professionals. They went above and beyond what is required to do their job. It was the little things like cleaning up after themselves and repairing annoyance type things that is not in the contract without being asked. At the end of the entire project, my wife and I were so pleased with MJ Masonry's work, we gave them a modest bonus. The icing on the cake was when some of our neighbors coming over and telling us the day after the projects completion that the Retaining Stone Wall, the Stockade Fence, and the Stone Walkway looks beautiful."

"Next Level Masonry rebuilt my front steps with Granite steps (4) and used granite pieces for the sides and front. They installed two-tone pavers for the walkway. The crew was amazing and their work is awesome!! I would recommend Next Level Masonry to anyone. The crew works hard, they are on time, and are very precise in measurements."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Unexpected expenses during masonry work stem from local permit requirements and necessary safety inspections. In Wakefield, excavating near Lake Quannapowitt reveals saturated soils that require immediate stabilization. Massachusetts building codes mandate footings at a 48-inch frost depth, meaning professionals discover undersized existing footings that demand remediation. Additionally, older neighborhoods conceal lead paint or deteriorated utility lines, adding required remediation steps to your project scope.

Helpful?

Protect your family during masonry work by installing temporary fencing around open excavations to meet local safety codes. For homes in older Wakefield neighborhoods, ensure professionals follow state lead-safe protocols to contain hazardous dust. Cutting stone generates harmful silica dust, so keep children and pets indoors during active demolition. Finally, block access to newly poured concrete until it cures completely in the cool, damp MA climate.

Helpful?

Inspect your property for masonry work needs in early spring, right after the ground thaws. Look for new cracking or crumbling mortar joints caused by harsh winter freeze-thaw cycles. In Wakefield, you must address white salt stains on chimneys or leaning retaining walls immediately. Horizontal foundation cracks appearing after heavy Massachusetts rainstorms indicate intense lateral soil pressure, requiring prompt professional evaluation before the next winter worsens the structural damage.

Helpful?

Homes built between 1900 and 1960 are prime candidates for masonry work due to age-related mortar deterioration. Properties near Lake Quannapowitt face high ground moisture, making them highly susceptible to foundation damage and white salt deposits. Additionally, hillside lots in Wakefield feature older stone retaining walls that require rebuilding as they age. Any chimney over 20 years old in MA requires an evaluation for freeze-thaw stress and missing mortar.

Helpful?

A major mistake during masonry work is skipping required permits, which complicates future home sales. Homeowners in Wakefield also err by scheduling projects late in the season, as Massachusetts weather drops below the 40-degree threshold required for proper mortar curing. Furthermore, applying modern cement to historic brick causes severe spalling. Address minor cracks before winter, as freezing temperatures expand trapped water and turn minor repairs into complete rebuilds.
