American Pest Solutions was founded in 1913 by Abraham Russell and he was later joined by his son Matthew in 1929. That same year, the company incorporated and moved to 1421 Main Street, Springfield, Massachusetts. Matthew headed up American for 37 years and in 1956 his son James joined the company after completing his college studies. Jim took over as President in 1971 and has run the company since then. Jim Russell has received numerous civic and industry awards while in this position. In 2005, Jim was selected to be the 13th recipient of the Bart Eldridge award, the highest award given to a pest management professional by the National Pest Management Association In 1986, James' son Robert, became the fourth generation to join the company. By this time, American had moved to it’s current location at 169 William St. in the south end of Springfield. General offices, the service department, warehouse, and garages are located at this address. Bob was appointed to the position of President in 1995 and in 2005, Bob became a Board Certified Entomologist. American continues to be a leader in our field, and in the community, and in March of 2006, American Pest Solutions was honored for it's 60th year as a member of the Better Business Bureau of Central New England. "It is never fun to have wildlife invading one's home. In my case, it was flying squirrels who had made a small opening and found a way into my attic. I called Paul Hewes, and he answered my call right away. He was at my house within 90 minutes, and professionally assessed the situation. He described my options and helped me choose. He installed traps right away, and came back to my house three times to collect and remove the trapped animals. In total he removed over 18 flying squirrels! He was knowledgeable and careful. He inspected my entire house for other potential entry spots, and took some proactive action. He was great to work with. I hope not to have to call him again, but if I have a problem like this again, he's at the top of my list. When you divide his price by the number of animals removed, it's a good deal for me, bad deal for them."

Carpenter ants don’t eat wood. It’s a common misconception because many kinds of termites eat wood as well as live inside it. Carpenter ants, however, are omnivores and only chew into wood to create pathways and nests, discarding the chewed wood as frass which is a major indicator of a carpenter ant problem. They prefer to eat smaller insects, sweet things like spilled honey, and sources of protein like pet food.

No, you should never vacuum or sweep up mouse or rat droppings, as doing so can release harmful particles into the air and increase your risk of disease exposure. Instead, wear gloves and a mask, spray the droppings with a disinfectant spray, let it soak for a few minutes, and then carefully wipe them up with paper towels. Afterward, disinfect the area thoroughly and immediately wash your hands when you’re done.

To clean a trash can with maggots, combine chlorine bleach and hot water in a 1-to-1 ratio and pour about half a gallon of the solution into the bottom of your garbage can. Just make sure there aren’t holes in the can before doing so. Close the lid, and let the fumes go to work to kill the maggots. Rinse the can with a hose outside. Consider finishing up with a bleach disinfectant and a scrub brush before letting the can dry completely. You can also consider hiring an exterminator near you for a quick, easy solution to maggots in your garbage cans.

Once the animals and their young are out of the house, remove the nest and locate any entry points. Some may be difficult to find because some animals can fit through very small holes. Once you’ve located as many entry points as possible, use materials such as metal or masonry to block off the entry. Ideally, you should choose materials that most animals cannot chew through. Create a one-way door or flap to allow animals to leave but not return. Additional methods include using repellants designed to make an area unappealing to the types of animals that find your home so inviting.
