"Jacob from Your Neighborhood Locksmith was great with communication. He was prompt to contact me and schedule service. He communicated frequently to provide updates on his ETA. He arrived on time and completed the initial project within an hour and without damaging the door. He was courteous, efficient and flexible, willingly fixing another lock for me when asked. Would definitely work with Jacob from Your Neighborhood Locksmith again."

"This guy is amazing. He said he would leave the keys for me and I could just come pick them up. I went and got them, drove all the way up to Saugus, and they worked perfect!! I am going to use this guy for any lock issues I need in the future. He did house keys for me, and I am going to go back to get a spare car key and fob."

"It was a great experience. Lior from Astro Locksmith was very responsive, helpful and professional. He even offered to come in advance of our original appointment. Our front door lock was very broken so he really had his work cut out for him. Now the lock works wonderfully and we can use our front door again. He's also a very nice guy and a pleasure to have working in your house."

"I just moved in to my apartment in Brookline & needed to change my locks. I called Comm Lock & made an appointment to change my locks for Wednesday, the day after we move in. While moving in on Tuesday, we lost the only set of keys we had and locked our selves out. I called Comm Lock & asked them if they could unlock our door. Even though we called at 9:30 Pm, they came over, let us in, & changed the locks on all 3 doors for us and gave us matching keys for all 3 doors. The technician was very pleasant and even gave us ideas on where to eat since we were new to the area. Jolie"

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

Smart door locks are safe to use and are usually considered safer than traditional locks with keys. While all electronic devices can be hacked, that doesn’t happen nearly as frequently in real life as people may think. You can also invest in multiple locks of different types for enhanced security so you don’t rely solely on one smart lock.

Rekeying is typically cheaper than replacing locks. Professional rekeying costs between $40 and $160, sometimes with an additional fee of $15 to $40 per lock. A locksmith's hourly rate averages around $75. If you do it yourself, a rekeying kit can cost as little as $10. In contrast, replacing a lock costs between $130 and $500, with an average of around $315, depending on the hardware and lock type. Rekeying is a simpler process that changes the key for your existing lock without replacing the hardware. It is a good option if you have a quality lock that works well, you've recently moved, you've lost a key, or you need a quick security upgrade. The best choice depends on the condition of your current locks.

In general, keyless door locks are considered safe, and their security depends on the type and quality of the lock. They cannot be picked like a traditional lock and often include added features like biometric access, PIN codes, and smartphone connectivity, which can make them more secure. However, they are not without risks. Potential vulnerabilities include hacking for Wi-Fi-connected models, battery failure, power outages, and technical malfunctions. To maximize security, it is important to choose a reliable brand, stay on top of software updates, and perform regular maintenance. While the risks are different, keyless locks are not considered more dangerous than traditional locks.

Expect to pay between $50 to $200 if you hire a locksmith to change your locks. That figure includes labor and the cost of basic hardware. The cost will naturally be higher if you plan to install more expensive locks, like smart locks, and if you need a lot of them.

Homeowners can save money by replacing locks themselves. A typical rekeying kit costs about $10 to $25. The only additional cost is purchasing new house keys, and those are no more than a few dollars per key. If you want to replace the locks on your own completely, the main cost is the price of the locks themselves. A standard knob-style lock starts around $25, while electronic locks and smart locks will run in the hundreds of dollars. The only additional tools you should need are a tape measure, screwdriver, and screws if they are not already provided.

A keypad deadbolt, a lock requiring a code entered on a keypad entry, can be a convenient option for families with children coming in and out and needing access to the home. It can also offer an easy solution if you rent your home out, since you can easily change the code as needed. So, depending on your home entry’s needs, a keypad deadbolt may be worth the extra expense.
