"We hired King’s Pavers and Masonry to install a paver walkway along the side of our house less than a year ago. Unfortunately, the pavers were sloped incorrectly, causing water to pool against the house, and the walkway is already collapsing due to poor workmanship. The pathway itself is uneven—making it difficult to roll a grill or anything else over it—and the overall shape of the walkway is noticeably crooked. While the work is under warranty, the company has refused to respond to repeated attempts to contact them, including certified mail."

"My driveway was well overdue for replacement When I bought my house nine years ago, but like many people I’m sure, it never rose to the top of my budget to do list. Finally, this year decided I had to bite the bullet. I got quotes from a number of companies, but BK & Sons offered the best price for the job with the changes I wanted (wider apron, reshaped parking area, etc) and the features I felt we’re important (10” of sub base, 2x 2” layers of asphalt vs 1 single 4” layer). My new driveway is so much better than I could have imagined. It’s laser straight where it once dipped and sagged, but they even improved the overall grade of my hill by raising up sections and lowering others to have a more consistent slope rather than a low spot and steep section. A layer of exposed aggregate concrete should be 1 to 2 inches thick if you’re installing it on top of existing concrete. If you’re pouring a new slab with the finish, slab thickness will depend on the application. Exposed aggregate concrete driveways should be 4 to 6 inches thick in most cases or 8 to 12 inches for commercial vehicles. Sidewalks, patios, and walkways should be 4 inches thick.

Concrete overlay and concrete resurfacing are both concrete repair options. The terms are used interchangeably, and the meaning can vary from contractor to contractor. An overlay normally involves a thicker layer of new concrete over the old slab, which can last longer and add structural integrity to the old concrete. Resurfacing involves a thinner layer of concrete or resurfacing material and is for cosmetic upgrades only.

Water that pools on concrete indicates a low spot somewhere on your driveway. You can level the slab with a concrete patching compound to help redirect water. You can also install drainage over existing concrete by digging out enough space for a channel drain or French drain or by adding a culvert below the slab.

If your concrete steps have crumbled or chipped, you can fix them by removing any chips or flakes, cleaning and wetting the affected area, applying a concrete bonding agent, and finally applying new concrete, usually in the form of Portland cement. For widespread damage, you can consider concrete resurfacing instead. For fixing concrete spalling that has led to deep damage, you might need to remove damaged material, add structural supports, and pour new concrete into a mold.

The best—and most popular—time of year to resurface a concrete driveway is the late spring. Concrete damage often peaks in the winter as the ground freezes and thaws. Waiting until late spring allows the ground to soften fully, so you don't run the risk of more damage from a sudden cold snap.
