"In late June of 2023, Neo and his apprentice replaced our water heater. Neo did charge slightly more than Google reported as the average price in our geographic area. However, "you get what you pay for." Neo was diligent, friendly, efficient, and knowledgeable. Neo responded promptly to all telephone calls and text messages. There was no drama with Neo. Neo was a consummate professional. We would definitely recommend S&S Piping and Heat. When we experienced a runaway faucet and a broken shut-off valve in the spring of 2024, Neo was quick to respond. Our over-engineered faucet required more than the replacement of a simple washer. In a professional manner, Neo repaired the faucet, replaced the valve, and corrected a related water-pressure problem. As usual, Neo offered good, solid communications. Yet again, we would definitely recommend S&S Piping and Heat."

"We found multiple issues with the heating system with our new house, and had to get a few service calls. We are glad to find Genove Oil & Air Co, they were very competent & professional, and fixed all the issues quickly and helped me understand the system better. Franco who does the scheduling is very accommodating, and kept me informed if the technicians were late. Frank and Richard (their Sr technicians) definitely know their stuff, and pleasant to talk to. This is a well run company and we would definitely use them again."

"Peter Sakalis of Poseidon Plumbing & Heating came by around 9 AM to see what the project involved. He gave me a verbal quote that sounded fair and was off to get the new water heater and had it installed with running hot water by 12 PM that day. I was very impressed with his work and professionalism. Cleaned up any mess and water created and I would recommend him to anyone."

"Mike Cappuccio came and reviewed our two bedroom garden level condo in Boston's South End to see if a heat pump would solve the heating problems. Electric baseboard heat was expensive and not doing the job. We also could eliminate noisy and inefficient window ACs. We had received a quote from another contractor and were not happy. Mike was able to overcome the issues we had with the approach of the first contractor and his quote was considerably lower.
Our experience with Adam and Dave was superb from day one. They were obviously expert installers and the work was of the highest quality. Every day they cleaned up at the end of the day and you would hardly know they had been there. I work at home and they installed the unit in the room with my office first and I was able to work without interruption after that. They treated our things with care and covered everything when there was any dust around. I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone.
The system works even better than we expected. The work was finished on the first 90 degree day of the year and we were ready. The system was advertised as very quiet but that is understatement, there is no sound at all. We can't test the heat yet but based on how things have gone so far we are not concerned.
The experience was the best I have ever had with a contractor.

Water Heaters questions, answered by experts

If you want instant hot water and to reduce water waste while improving convenience, a hot water recirculating system is worth it, especially if you find your hot water heater is not hot enough. These systems can save thousands of gallons of water each year so you don't have to wait for hot water at faucets and showers. The upfront investment can be high, especially for systems requiring additional plumbing, but the long-term savings on water bills and added comfort make them a worthwhile upgrade.

Signs your electric water heater is failing include inconsistent water temperature, reduced hot water supply, longer heating times, or discolored water (rusty or cloudy). Unusual noises like popping or rumbling suggest sediment buildup, while leaks or corrosion around the tank signal structural damage. If your unit is over 10 to 15 years old and experiencing frequent issues, it may be time to replace it.

The lifespan of a water heater depends on its type, usage, and maintenance schedule. Traditional tank-style water heaters typically last between 8 and 12 years, though the range can be as wide as 6 to 15 years. Within this category, gas models often last 8-12 years, while electric models may last 10-15 years. In contrast, tankless water heaters have a significantly longer lifespan, often lasting up to 20 years or more. Factors like heavy usage, hard water, and sediment buildup can shorten a unit's life. To extend its lifespan, it is crucial to perform regular maintenance, such as flushing the tank annually and scheduling professional inspections. If your unit is over a decade old and shows signs of rust, leaks, strange noises, or inconsistent heating, it is likely time for a replacement.

Professional installs conclude in mere hours, with complexity differences possibly prolonging efforts slightly. Site condition often dictates the exact duration.

A larger heater requires a larger breaker—unless there’s one already installed. The longer answer to this question is more nuanced. Do you place demands on the heater at the same time as running other heavy-duty appliances like ovens and washing machines? Do you live in an older home that may not have considered the higher electrical demands we have now? Breakers need to be sized at 125% of the load. To find that load, you should call a local electrical pro.
