Small jobs welcome

"Preston is a miracle worker. We were having some mysterious issues with our toilet and shower drains in one the bathrooms in our home in Lincoln. Preston came over and performed a very thorough "investigation" and provided a couple of options to rectify our situation. He performed the work and everything has been flowing flawlessly ever since. We're going to definitely stick with Preston and Neighborhood Drains for all of our future sewer related needs. Give him a call. You definitely won't be disappointed."

"I was very impressed with how he explained everything, performed the work and kept us informed with what was going on. I was able to watch everything and he followed the outline he gave us exactly. He was very knowledgeable and even offered much advice for a second house of mine that has a failing septic system. See their web site which lists all the types of work they perform with all the information that he was telling me personally. I would definitely use him again and certainly recommend him to anyone else. Note, that he will give a discount to Angie's List members, in our case 15%. The $400 charge, listed somewhere above, does not include the discount.

The following is a detailed account of what Jim did at our house for, I think, a typical badly blocked sewer line.
We contacted Anchor Sewer and Drain Cleaning in order to fix an apparent blocked main sewer line exiting the house.
The blockage was causing the water to back up and come into the cellar via holes in the vent pipe. The house was built in the 1930's so the pipes are very old and fragile.
We called about 8:30 AM and were pleasantly surprised that he could come that same day at 11:00 AM. He arrived on time at 11:00 AM.
Prior to the work being performed, he gave us prices for fixing the problem based on a couple of possible scenarios, dependent upon what he might find.
He also explained what each solution would entail and how long it might take. (3 hours in our case)
He was very careful getting the old main cap off the sewer line, which was stuck on, without breaking any of the old pipes.
Once access was obtained he used a specialized hose to pressurize the line to try to "blow out" any clog. However, this was not enough to fix the problem.
The next step was to use the electric "rooter" to cut through all the years of old sludge built up in the horizontal pipes and to cut any roots that might have gotten in over the last 80 years (which, it turns out we had). The rooter is a 200 pound machine that he had to get down the steep outside cellar stairs. It is an electric powered device with rotating cutters that clean the sewer and literally cut roots. The rooting was necessarily a slow process in our case as it was hitting blockages along the way that required slow going. He also had to negotiate joints in pipes that caused the machine to hang up. In the end, he was able to root the whole 90 feet to the town sewer.
Jim indicated that he always uses his "scope" to verify the success of the rooting process, which may not be performed by other companies, without an additional charge. This is a great device that clearly shows the inside of the pipe visually on the color screen (6" x 8" maybe?) of a portable device connected to the scope cable. In our case it showed a (now) very clean pipe with the remnants of very fine roots in the first 15 feet of pipe. (These were attended to last). The scope software also displays the current distance of the scope head to the house. Using the "scope" he was also able to identify a problem with the town's sewer that was not emptying properly and told us to notify the town.
The last step was to explain how to use a chemical, periodically, to kill the cut roots and to prevent future root growth. This is simply a foaming chemical that is applied through the toilet. He gave us the first treatment which we immediately applied.
Again, I recommend Anchor Sewer and Drain Cleaning for anyone else.

"We had an emergency having to do with a crack in the main sewer pipe. It took the original plumber that one of the trustees dispatched to the property 3 days just to come up with a plan of action. Meanwhile, the entire building was not able to use any of the facilities, including toilets, showers, dishwashers and washers. When we finally received a proposal, it was for most invasive and expensive option - digging a tranche from our basement all the way to the town sewer line in the middle of the street and replacing the entire main sewer pipe. BTW, no actual diagnostics was ever performed (most contractors examine the pipe with the camera and based on actual results, recommend a solution, which could involve tranchless pipe lining or replacement in worst case scenario). To me it seemed unreasonable, so I decided to call other contractors to get a second opinion, including Ladd. To my pleasant surprise, David Ladd was one of the two contractors that shortly returned my call, although it was Saturday. Furthermore, David stopped by on Sunday to assess the situation on site. He was ready to examine the pipe with his camera on Monday and potentially get started with repairs on Tuesday. All trustees were left with very positive impression after talking to David. If we did not have another contractor, whom we contacted before, stopping by first thing Monday morning and being able to do the job right there and then, we would have most likely hired Ladd company to do the work. We will definitely consider David Ladd for any future project."

Sewer Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Simple blockages can be cleared using household plungers or manual snakes, provided no severe plumbing issues exist.

In most cases, drain cleaners will not clear a clogged sewer line, and they’re likely to damage your plumbing. Sewer lines are several inches wide, meaning any material that clogs it will need to be large. Drain cleaner can work on small clogs, but it usually won’t clear a larger one in a sewer main. Drain cleaners can also easily damage and corrode your plumbing with prolonged contact, and a clog will keep the cleaner in contact with the pipes for an extended period. Hire a professional sewer cleaner instead for a safe fix.

DIY is not recommended due to safety risks and specialized equipment requirements. Hire professionals for effective clearing.

Some of the most common plumbing problems in mobile homes are frozen pipes, leaking pipes, clogged drains, and low pressure. Since the pipes in a mobile home aren’t as insulated as those in a standard build, they’re more susceptible to fluctuating temperatures and damage.

If methods like hot water or a plunger don’t work on your clogged drain, you can snake your drain to dislodge the plug. This can be a messy process, taking some physical effort and additional time over the other drain-clearing options. You can purchase a drain snake at a hardware store and choose from handheld options or those attached to a drill. Just work slowly, and be ready to call a plumber if you’re unable to reach the clog from your drain or P-trap.
