"Extremely well. Great communication on scheduling and keeping appointment. They did an excellent job of moving equipment in and out. The basement which is not an easy space to move round in was left spotless. All materials promised had been removed. The team at the house was polite and unobtrusive. Very professional. I recommended them to my neighbor and would use them again."

The terrific asbestos removal job was done, my place is left been very clean. The most important for me was a direct and clear communication with Kevin from the first phone conversation, during the project and after it was finished. He is a very knowledgeable specialist and the nicest person. Kevin went above and beyond making me been comfortable and absolutely worry free. "Nobody wants to find asbestos in their house - it's one of those unexpected surprises that costs you extra money during an already expensive renovation process. Affordable Environmental lived up to their name and made the process as painless as possible. We hired Brady and his team to remove 7 layers of flooring in our kitchen - 3 of them had asbestos. Brady was quick to respond and honest in his assessment of the problem, as well as our options for removal. He showed up when he said he would be there throughout the entire process and kept us in the loop when delays happened. The job ended up being a much bigger project than any of us expected. Brady handled himself professionally and took extra time/resources to get the job done right without slamming us with additional charges. The guys cleaned up after themselves and Brady followed up with us to make sure we were happy with how everything turned out. All in all, a great experience with a top notch company. Fingers crossed that we won't find any other surprises. But, if we do, I'll be calling Brady."

"Excellent work done. Could not be happier. All pipes with asbestos removed from the basement. Passed asbestos inspection. Pipes were hard to reach and care was needed. They were easy to work with and responsive to all my concerns. I highly recommend them."

Asbestos Removal questions, answered by experts

Yes. Gutting a house to the studs may actually be a good option if you believe a home contains toxic materials like asbestos, mold, or lead paint. However, this must be done under the supervision of licensed remediation experts.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), hazardous waste is generally classified into four main categories:

1. Characteristic Wastes: These exhibit at least one of four hazardous traits: ignitability (flammable, like gasoline), corrosivity (can rust or decompose materials, like car batteries), reactivity (unstable and can explode, like aerosol cans), or toxicity (harmful when ingested, like lead-based paint).

2. Listed Wastes: These are specific wastes from manufacturing and industrial processes that the EPA has officially designated as hazardous. They include byproducts from processes that use solvents, pesticides, and other chemicals.

3. Universal Wastes: These are commonly generated hazardous items that are subject to streamlined regulations. Examples include batteries, pesticides, mercury-containing equipment (e.g., bulbs), and some lamps.

4. Mixed Wastes: This category includes waste that contains both hazardous and radioactive components, making it subject to regulation by both the EPA and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Some pros may recommend covering a popcorn ceiling that tests positive for asbestos with beadboard ceiling planks or drywall. The cost to install a beadboard ceiling averages more than $5,000, but you likely will pay more than the average for the installer to deal with the asbestos safely. Installing a beadboard ceiling or new drywall will disturb the asbestos and release some microscopic fibers, so the installer will need to take precautions.

It is best to wear a respirator during the sanding, painting, and sealing process. It can filter particles, vapors, and fumes that can be toxic to breathe. So it’s better to be safe and protect your lungs during this project.

According to the National Cancer Institute, asbestos-related diseases can take anywhere from 10 to 40 years for symptoms to appear. The health risks increase with prolonged and heavier exposure. Risk factors also include:

  • Amount of exposure

  • Chemical makeup, size, and shape of the asbestos fibers

  • Length of time a person is exposed to asbestos

  • Genetic factors

  • Source of exposure (direct exposure or secondhand exposure from someone directly exposed)
