"Al was fantastic! He clearly explained that my fireplace was shutting off as a safety feature due to low oxygen levels. He also reassembled the logs in the firebox and showed me the proper way to start and stop the fireplace. Highly recommend his service!"

"I Highly recommend Brendan of Avery Masonry. I had a contractor coordination dilemma, between tiling, surround rebuilding, plastering around the surround to create a new fireplace look. I also had issues with my oil flu liner. He saved me from contractors overselling work that didn’t need to be done and those contractors that where not able to handle all parts of the redesign. He became the “general contractor” for my project and did an excellent job! Thank you Brendan."

"When we had our home inspected our inspector found that the partition wall was missing in our smoke box. We did not have enough time to have a mason come look at it but I contacted Jim via email to ask him about this issue. Jim was good about getting back to me and assuring us that it could be fixed and that it shouldn't break the bank. We decided to purchase the home and while doing some work we found that most of the stone facade was no longer attached to the fireplace. We called Jim to have him take a look at it. He said it would cost $100 to inspect our chimney but if we used him for work on the chimney that the $100 would go towards that bill. Luckily Jim found no other issues with our chimney except that the critter cage was separating a bit so he quickly fixed that. Jim said that extending the partition and rebuilding the stone facade would cost $1,500 and take one and a half days but that he wouldn't be available for 6 to 8 weeks. We decided to go with him because we thought the cost sounded reasonable and because other masons we had talked to previously said they couldn't even look at our chimney for weeks. When it came time to have the work done is when we ran into some issues. Jim originally said they would start on the day after Columbus day but then later told us that they would start on Columbus day but then on Columbus day he told us his associate didn't want to work on Columbus day so they would start around noon on the following day. This wasn't a big deal as it seemed like one guy decided he wanted to start early while the other wanted to take the holiday. Unfortunately, they didn't come the day after Columbus day either. There were several dropped calls that day and when I finally got in touch with Jim it was mid afternoon and he informed me that another job took too long and he wouldn't be able to start until the following day. He also told me at this point that the job would take three days instead of one and a half. They started on Wednesday but were unable to continue on Thursday because of a rainstorm. Unfortunately there was now a hole in our chimney and in the wall around the fireplace before a rainstorm was supposed to hit. I decided to cover the hole in the chimney with plastic to be safe. The following day Jim and his associate came back to finish the job. Unfortunately I came back to find that I had some cleaning to do. In the end they did a good job at a good price from what we can tell and in the number of days originally quoted. However, he pushed back the start date a couple of times, changed his mind on how long it would take, didn't think of covering the hole in our chimney before a rainstorm and left a bit of a mess. Since quality of work and price are most important we'd consider him for future work but may look into other masons as well.

"They inspected the chimney from up on the roof, something that the chimney sweeps that had been cleaning the chimney since 2016, when we first moved in, had never done. They took pics and showed us how the lining of the chimney was collapsing and it had been in this state for a long time. So in addition to cleaning the chimney, they also replaced the lining inside it. It was an expense I didn't expect, but we use the fireplace a lot and it needed to be done."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

Single-pane windows might let in the cold, but if you’re not ready for a long-term solution or window replacement, there are quick fixes to keep your space warmer. Start by sealing gaps with weatherstripping or caulking around the frame to block drafts. For an extra barrier, apply window insulation film to the glass, trapping an air pocket between the film and the window. Thick curtains or thermal drapes can also help keep the chill at bay. And if you’re in a pinch and looking to get creative, bubble wrap can provide a surprisingly effective layer of insulation—just spritz the window with water and press it on, bubble side in.

Your chimney needs a structurally sound chimney cap, protective lining, damper, chimney flashing, and brick and mortar to prevent water from goind down your chimney. A pro can help you identify where the issue is so that you can stop water from coming down the smoke shaft, through your damper, and into your home.

No. Removing the cause of concern will only lead to deeper concern. You cannot use any fire-powered appliance like a fireplace or furnace without an escape route for the smoke and fumes. If you remove the flue intending to repair or replace it, you should only use the fireplace, wood stove, or furnace once the flue is in working order. If you cannot replace the flue you have removed, call a chimney repair professional immediately.

Gas fireplace repair costs an average of $600, but prices can vary widely depending on the issue, parts needed, and service provider. Simple repairs like cleaning or pilot light adjustments may cost between $75 and $200, while more significant repairs involving component replacement can cost $1,000 or more. The overall cost typically falls within the $100 to $2,500 range.

Typical price ranges for repairing different components of a gas fireplace are:

  • Thermocouple: $75 to $350

  • Thermopile: $75 to $350

  • Gas valve: $150 to $300

  • Pilot light: $100 to $350

  • Igniter: $100 to $150

  • Mantel: $500 to $1,200

  • Hearth: $150 to $800

While wood stove fans are effective for improving heat distribution, they rely on the stove reaching a certain temperature to operate efficiently. If the stove does not generate enough heat, the fan may not start or may not move air effectively. Additionally, like any fan, wood stove fans cannot cool a stove or reduce its heat output—they only redistribute existing warmth.
