Sealing a cabinet after staining is optional but recommended for best results. Wood sealer keeps out moisture, which protects against scratches, warping, chipping, discoloration, and mildew. If maintained, custom cabinets can last up to 25 years or more, nearly double the lifespan of prefabricated cabinets. Of course, this longevity comes with a higher price tag. If you have the budget and plan to live in your home for decades, it’s a worthwhile investment.

It’s best to stick with lightweight cabinets, such as medium-density fiberboard, if you don’t have a wall stud to secure them to. Unless you’re attaching the cabinet to a flat board attached to wall studs, it’s best not to risk it with heavy cabinetry or contents. Solid wood cabinets and heavy dishware should be avoided if you cannot secure the cabinet to a wall stud. Either way, always check the weight on your wall anchors and be sure not to exceed it.

To successfully build a shelf unit with plywood, you’ll need sheets that are at least 0.25 inches thick. Any thinner and your shelves will be flimsy and less likely to last. Expect to pay around $300 for a professional to build a basic shelving unit, or up to $1,300 for custom built-in shelves.

Moving a kitchen cabinet can be extremely tricky for DIYers, especially if it's attached to plumbing, electrical outlets, or walls. The project requires meticulous planning, the right tools, and some muscle, not to mention a friend or two to help.
