"We own a 100+ year old home in a historic district. Prior to the previous job I mentioned, they have worked on our house throughout the years.  Interior wise- they remodeled a bathroom (and they had suggestions for the design of the bathroom which kept in in keeping with the period of the house- it's beautiful); they also installed multiple layers of cove molding downstairs- the ceilings are 11 feet, so typical cove molding would not do.  They also did some drywall and painting.

On the exterior, they constructed a fabulous pergola and a garden room detached from the house.  The garden room is a separate building and is made of reclaimed windows- a unique design with a unique shingle type roof with skylights.  About eight years ago they added a back porch with a balcony above.  The also added a door upstairs that opens out to the balcony.  When you look at the construction, you would never know it was added on.  It looks like it was built 115 years ago when the house was built. The porch and balcony above, pergola and garden room have transformed our backyard and home.

Their work is good and they have good ideas to add to my ideas.  I have been satisfied with their work.  The last job on our rental we had a mix up with what time we were meeting initially, but otherwise they are reliable about showing up and making appointments.  I would definitely hire them again.

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

No, a chimney crown is not the same as a chimney cap. A chimney crown is a flat cement area on top of a masonry chimney. It starts where the masonry part of the chimney ends at the very top and domes upward toward the flue opening. A chimney cap sits on top of the crown over the flue. It is usually made of metal and allows smoke to escape without letting in rainwater.

No. Pellet stoves are specifically designed to burn manufactured wood or biomass pellets. Attempting to burn other materials, such as regular firewood or paper products, can damage the stove, compromise its efficiency, and even pose safety hazards due to inconsistent combustion and increased emissions. It's crucial to follow manufacturer guidelines and only use pellets that are specifically recommended for your pellet stove model to ensure safe and optimal performance over its life span.

Gas fireplace inserts are considered the most efficient because they convert more of the fuel source—gas—into heat. They offer excellent heat output per the amount of fuel they use. While electric fireplace inserts are praised for their efficiency, keep in mind that they don’t offer as strong a heat output but may still be a great choice if you want an efficient option.

You shouldn’t remove a fireplace yourself. Before beginning this job, you’d need to know whether or not you have a load-bearing fireplace. To do that, you’d need help from a structural engineer. Plus, fireplace removals require permits and often involve working with gas lines or electricity, which can be dangerous. For all of these reasons, it’s best to hire a pro for this project.

Single-pane windows might let in the cold, but if you’re not ready for a long-term solution or window replacement, there are quick fixes to keep your space warmer. Start by sealing gaps with weatherstripping or caulking around the frame to block drafts. For an extra barrier, apply window insulation film to the glass, trapping an air pocket between the film and the window. Thick curtains or thermal drapes can also help keep the chill at bay. And if you’re in a pinch and looking to get creative, bubble wrap can provide a surprisingly effective layer of insulation—just spritz the window with water and press it on, bubble side in.
