On the first fireplace, which we use about once a year, at Christmas, he pointed out a crack in the back brick area.  The crack was filled in and repaired.  He had an assistant, and he cleaned that chimmey
The second Fireplace is rarely used, but needed to be cleaned, and the top replaced as I fear squirrels will come in.
The third fireplace was most dirty, as hasn't been cleaned for a few years, and in the cold winter months, and we use it at those times almost nightly.  I had heard animals on that one.  He climbed on the top, and there were no animals in it, but they had been playing around with the top which had been bent by a tree limb.  He replaced that top as well.
Finally, we have a screen on the one fireplace that is one of those built in after the fact...and we have just put up with the bent built in screen.  He is ordering one, and will put it in place...that will be about $100.  I think it is fair, the two men were here about 2 hours.

Hadley inspected my chimney pipe from my roof and found it to be in deplorable (creosote) condition and showed me why.  He gave me options/suggestions that included recommending I consult with a stove and chimney pipe installer (reference installer provided) so that I might consider chimney pipe replacement.  He gave me a price for him to clean my existing chimney pipe and explained what he would do / what I could expect but, laid the groundwork that I might appreciate the gravity of the condition of my existing system and that I might consider replacement alternatives even though he is not an installer.
I followed his advice and now have a new stove and new chimney pipe.  
Hadley did not make a penny off me but, gave me something very valuable............peace of mind.  I am grateful to Hadley.

He came out to give us an estimate on cleaning the chimney and adding a new cap. He acted as if he was getting started on the job so I asked him if he was aware that we were looking for an estimate. He said "yes, on cleaning and adding a cap". I called my husband in front of him to confirm that there would be no work today. My husband said let him sweep since he made the trip to the house. I asked the guy how much for just the sweep. He said $140. I said ok go ahead and clean and leave us an estimate for the other. He agreed but then went outside and sent his son in to clean while he INSTALLED A CAP!!! He came in with a bill and I already had a check made out for $140. He then told me he went ahead and did all of the work. He said "I know you told me not too but I might get busy or it may rain on a later date". I told him my husband would probably mail him a check but we would never refer him to anyone. He said "well don't pay for it then". I said we don't do business like that.

Even though he did a good job in previous years he didn't return phone calls in a timely manner, I'd have to call several times for him to return the call. His price was reasonable to start with but kept going up. They did an excellent job cleaning up after themselves.

Called Hadley's and he promptly called me back and set an appointment. He called the day of the appointment because it was raining hard and said he would have to reschedule because of the weather which was understandable because he had to climb a tall ladder to access the chimney outside. He showed up on time on the day of the rescheduled appointment and got right to work, even calling the manufacturer of my old fireplace to get more information about it. He said the chimney cap and cover needed replacing and took measurements to have them fabricated. He returned a week later, as promised, and installed the new cap and cover and showed me the old ones so I could see how corroded and rusted they were. The new stuff looks great, Hadley worked hard and left everything nice and clean, and he offered me great advice on how to maintain my fireplace. Excellent job by a retired firefighter who really knows his stuff and went the extra mile to provide great service.
