Matching new paint with an old, faded color can be tricky. First, you’ll need to determine whether the paint on your house is latex-based or oil-based. Plus, refinishing involves heavy foot traffic, equipment, and potential splashes from stain or sealant, which can damage new paint. By tackling the stairs first, you reduce the risk of damaging painted walls and can more easily tape off and protect surfaces during painting.

You should apply at least two coats of paint to your project, but some surfaces may benefit from a third coat of paint. Ensure you’ve waited the right length of time before applying a second or third coat of paint, and try to apply it evenly for a cohesive finish.
