You should be able to paint most of your garage door with a small roller, but there will likely be details and nooks and crannies that are best handled with the help of a detail brush. Plywood or solid wood are meant to last, and can handle the weight of several large items. If you want to spend a little more for a moisture-resistant material, you can consider using steel.
