If you're hoping to save time by simply painting over your front door, we have bad news. This usually won’t give you the results that you want. You need to fully prep your door so that the paint adheres to the surface. If you don't sand and clean your door, you may find that you need to repaint your door sooner than you would if you had prepared the door properly in the first place.

The best time to paint gutters is when the weather forecast predicts clear skies and low humidity. High humidity will likely prolong dry time, and rainy or snowy conditions may ruin your hard work before it can cure. If you have no other option than to work in inclement weather, consider choosing paint with a faster dry time, like acrylic or latex, rather than one that takes a while, like oil paint.

You can paint over wood, wood-laminate, and metal cabinets, but you need to prepare the surface first. Plastic laminate cabinets and thin veneers may accept a layer of paint depending on their condition, but they require special techniques and paints. If your cabinets sag or have significant damage, it may be a better investment to replace your cabinets than paint over them.

If you’ve already installed your carpet and your baseboards need a fresh coat, painter’s tape can help ensure the paint stays on the wall and off the flooring. Be sure to add a margin of 2 to 3 inches of tape along the carpet to give yourself extra space for any unexpected spills or drips. You should also lay down a plastic tarp and secure it as close to the wall as possible with painter’s tape.

The best closet paint colors will help make it easier to get dressed. Cool, contrasting whites make all of your clothing items pop and help you feel like you have a more organized closet by creating a crisp, clean background. For a more luxurious feel, jewel-toned paints like emerald or ruby can have a widening effect, making your closet appear larger and deeper. Satin finishes are less likely to show scuffs and streaks than semi-gloss paints, making them ideal for closets.
