In many cases, you can sleep in a room painted with low-VOC paint on the same day you painted it. You’ll want to give it at least 10 hours to allow any lingering chemicals to dissipate. Paint comes in a variety of finishes. In most cases, a satin or semi-gloss sheen is a safe bet because it’s easy to wipe down and clean, while hiding scuffs and scratches. However, if you’re looking for a statement piece, consider using a high-gloss sheen to bring drama and light into the space. Keep in mind, while visually striking, higher sheens are more likely to show imperfections.

You can avoid brush marks when painting your front door by painting the door off the hinges and then going over the door with a dry roller after using a paintbrush to smooth out any rough edges. You also want to avoid overloading your paintbrush with paint, as this can create an oversaturated surface where wet paint has nowhere to go.

Depending on your lighting and design style, some finishes will enhance certain colors to your liking more than others. For example, high-gloss finishes can intensify deeper shades such as navy blue and emerald green, making them feel luxurious and bold. On the other hand, you may appreciate how soft pastels and neutrals have a more calming, smooth feel in matte or eggshell finishes.

Unlike staining concrete, painting concrete often results in chips and peeling over time. You can expect numerous touchups over the years if the concrete is in a high-traffic area. Since concrete paints are opaque, you may also find it more difficult to get the exact color results you want. Lastly, painting concrete can make it much more slippery unless you mix in an additive for traction.
