"We were very happy with the service Bill and Gina of B&W Asphalt Paving & Seal Coating provided. Service was provided in a timely manner. The quality of or new paved driveway is excellent. We will ask them to seal coat in the Fall. I recommend them highly. Sean Archer of Northwestern Heights"

"The approach to the road they poured for us is beautiful, but it wasn’t quite angled properly for the existing driveway. That is the reason for docking half a star. Now our drive looks like it has a kink in it. Other than that we are happy with it. Haven’t been able to drive on it yet since we are still in the 21-day waiting period."

Customers say: True professional

"We had several projects done. We had a garage floor poured, new sidewalks, a porch repaired and a patio resurfaced. The work was flawless, finished ahead of schedule and no BS. What we appreciated most was that they actually listened well enough to complete the work exactly as we requested. Most projects require constant reminders and reiteration with other contractors-NOT with SRS Concrete. Itâ s done right!"

"It was a pleasure working with Jonathan and Alan. Their attention to detail is outstanding. They coordinated the replacement of our driveway from obtaining our permit to overseeing the job as it was being done. The price was very reasonable and the quality of the work is top notch! I highly recommend anybody considering a driveway replacement to contact Jonathan and Alan. I’m glad I did!"

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

There’s no single best asphalt grade—it all comes down to where and how it’s used. Highways and heavy-traffic roads need something tough, like polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) or Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA). Local roads and parking lots rely on the Performance Graded (PG) system, chosen based on climate. A PG 64-28 mix, for example, handles a broad temperature range while simpler, more cost-effective mixes are typically enough for residential driveways. The best grade of asphalt depends on traffic, weather, and your budget, which is why a professional’s input is always a smart move before making a decision.

The three most common types of asphalt are hot asphalt, MC cold mix, and UPM asphalt. Hot asphalt is used most often for paving and patching roadways while it’s hot and workable. MC cold mix asphalt cures more slowly than hot asphalt, but it can be used for temporary patches and repairs in low-traffic areas. UPM is also used cold, but it can be used as a longer-term fix, usable in almost any conditions at almost any temperature.

Sometimes, when people talk about asphalt driveways, they’re actually referring to asphalt concrete, which is a completely different compound. Asphalt concrete is asphaltic cement combined with sand or grit. It is significantly more lasting and durable than regular asphalt but also much more expensive. If you’re considering using asphalt concrete, ask an asphalt company for their expert opinions.

Many asphalt companies have experience with tar and chip paving, but not all. The process is unique enough—and not incredibly common enough—that you may have to look around for a tar and chip specialist. However, speaking with a driveway company is a great place to start, especially if they have experience with multiple materials.

The material that’s best for your private road depends on your property, the climate in your area, and your personal preferences. Gravel is an affordable option, but some homeowners don’t like how it looks. It can be a pain to remove snow from, and it requires more ongoing maintenance than asphalt or concrete. However, while these other options require less maintenance and make snow removal a breeze, they’re more expensive and will need repairs from time to time. Ultimately, you’ll have to choose the road material that suits you and your property best.
