"The approach to the road they poured for us is beautiful, but it wasn’t quite angled properly for the existing driveway. That is the reason for docking half a star. Now our drive looks like it has a kink in it. Other than that we are happy with it. Haven’t been able to drive on it yet since we are still in the 21-day waiting period."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

It's time to consider new asphalt paving in Lafayette, IN, if your driveway is 15-20 years old or has over 30% of its surface covered in cracks. Repeated annual repairs or persistent drainage problems also signal that a replacement is more cost-effective. The best time to assess winter damage is in the spring, allowing you to schedule the project for optimal installation temperatures.

Helpful?

In Lafayette, IN, you'll find several types of asphalt paving contractors. Residential specialists focus on driveways, while commercial contractors handle large lots. Full-service companies manage projects from excavation to sealing, and maintenance-focused pros specialize in repairs and sealcoating. Municipal contractors work on public roads and must meet specific Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) standards, ensuring a wide range of expertise is available.

Helpful?

In Lafayette, using metal snow shovels, applying harsh rock salt, or parking heavy vehicles in the same spot can weaken asphalt paving. Ignoring oil stains, skipping annual sealcoating, and neglecting to clear leaves from drainage areas also contribute to early wear. Allowing tree roots to grow under the pavement or delaying crack repairs can lead to costly damage in Lafayette’s variable climate.

Helpful?

In Lafayette's climate, small issues escalate fast. Look for interconnected "alligator" cracks, which signal base failure common in the area's clay soil. Any standing water after rain is a major red flag, as it accelerates deterioration. Also, watch for crumbling edges or a faded gray color, which indicates the asphalt is becoming brittle and vulnerable to Indiana's freeze-thaw cycles.

Helpful?

In Lafayette, most asphalt paving projects for standard driveways take about two to three days, including preparation and installation. Larger or uniquely shaped driveways may require up to five days. Weather delays are common, especially in spring and fall. After paving, allow 24 to 48 hours for initial curing before light use, and factor in extra time if local permits or inspections are needed.
