"The painter sent to perform the work was punctual, pleasant, communicative, prepared, and knowledgeable in his trade. He discussed with me what could be performed in the allotted time and her performed the work diligently. The ceilings turned out well. At one point, he needed to step out for a tool and did not count that against the time I paid for. Great job.

"It could not have gone better. JJ came to look at the staircase on a Wednesday. We got his bid on Friday, and it was significantly less than the only other bid we received. JJ said he could start work on the coming Monday and finish on Thursday. That’s exactly what happened. JJ is a nice guy who knows his stuff and is easy to work with. We’ll surely hire him again."

Driveway Gates questions, answered by experts

Yes, most electric and automatic gates can be opened manually. They are equipped with a manual override or release mechanism that detaches the motor from the gate, allowing it to be moved by hand. This feature is essential during power outages or other emergencies.

To activate the manual override, you will typically need a specific key or tool. In some cases, you may also need a screwdriver to remove a cover to access the release mechanism. The use of a key is a common security measure to prevent unauthorized individuals from manually opening the gate.

Because every model is different, it is highly recommended to consult your gate's user manual to familiarize yourself with the specific procedure before you need to use it. Keep any necessary keys or tools in an accessible location. Be aware that automatic gates can be very heavy, so opening and closing them manually may be difficult.

In North America, electric gates are also subject to the UL 325 Standard for Safety, which includes provisions to allow emergency responders to access the property.

To make your gate safe, purchase a gate made from strong material such as wrought iron, stainless steel, or other metals. Ensure that the gate has strong joints and bars that are welded on rather than inserted loosely. If you’re concerned about people climbing over your gate, you can deter them by installing fence spikes along the top as an extra precaution.

Other mechanisms can help you keep your gate securely shut. Secure gate latch types will do the job, such as magnetic or spring-loading, self-closing lever varieties, or automatic gate openers. However, they won’t control the speed at which the gate closes. You can purchase slam plates that use rubber buffers to reduce noise and the potential damage-inducing impact of a fast-closing, heavy gate.

Driveway gates can last anywhere from 10 to 30 years, depending on how well you maintain your gate, the material type, how frequently you use it, and whether you choose an automatic or manual gate. Automatic gates generally require more maintenance than manual gates due to their added sliding gate mechanisms, which can go out from frequent use.

Your gate should be 3/4 to an inch smaller than the opening. The opening size that you need for your gate can vary depending on your hinge type. You may also need to add reinforcing braces if the gap between your gate and the fence is not uniform from top to bottom.
