"The painter sent to perform the work was punctual, pleasant, communicative, prepared, and knowledgeable in his trade. He discussed with me what could be performed in the allotted time and her performed the work diligently. The ceilings turned out well. At one point, he needed to step out for a tool and did not count that against the time I paid for. Great job.

"It could not have gone better. JJ came to look at the staircase on a Wednesday. We got his bid on Friday, and it was significantly less than the only other bid we received. JJ said he could start work on the coming Monday and finish on Thursday. That’s exactly what happened. JJ is a nice guy who knows his stuff and is easy to work with. We’ll surely hire him again."

Driveway Gates questions, answered by experts

It does matter which way a hinge is installed because it’s possible to install a hinge backward. The hinge pin should face the direction in which the door will swing, making the pin visible. Exterior doors that swing outward need a security hinge with an Allen set screw in the center to prevent someone from removing the hinge from the outside and accessing the home or business.

Yes, professionals can install gates with locking mechanisms and access control systems for added security.

Generally, the standard 10- to 12-inch-long and 1- to 1.5-inch-diameter gate springs will work. However, if you have an especially wide, thick, or heavy garden gate, you may need to opt for a longer, broader—and pricier—model to ensure secure closure and good longevity. These typically range between 12 and 16 inches long and are over 1.5 inches in diameter.

Wood, wrought iron, aluminum, and steel are common materials. Choose based on durability, aesthetics, and maintenance needs.

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.
