"Mike went above and beyond for my plaster wall and ceiling repair projects. We bought an old house that had some water and settling damage on the plaster walls and a few water spots on the ceiling. Mike identified all the issues, including one or two I had overlooked, and was able to fix them all in one day. He also offered expert advice on painting the room after the repairs were made. I wish I hadn't waited a few months to tackle this project. I'm very happy with the results."

"I noticed what I thought initially was my above the counter cabinets coming loose from the wall. Mike from Perfect Work was in contact with me and looked at pictures of what I was concerned with. He identified that it was a cosmetic issue, and not the actual cabinets coming away from the wall. He also took the time to come by my place on his way to another job to see it in person. It turned out to be the trim in one area coming loose, and not the cabinets themselves. I know little about cabinetry, so to have someone take the time to allay my fears, was really appreciated. I know this business to be trustworthy and pleasant to work with now, and should the need for home projects come up in the future, I would not hesitate to use Angi, or directly call Perfect Work to do the job. Thank you again Mike!"

"Highly recommend Yolis Cleaning and Painting Services! We had them paint the walls and ceiling of two rooms. Excellent quality work, and they are very conscientious. Communication was very good, showed up on time and cleaned up really well after each day. We plan to use again for other jobs in our home."

Customers say: Quick response

"We hired New Age to demolish and rebuild a crumbling basement wall. We were impressed with their work ethic. Oliver and Meme demolished the wall in the morning and started rebuilding that afternoon. We have a cinder block foundation, not poured concrete. They did a most professional job and we felt we got our moneyâ s worth. We would definitely recommend them. They cleaned up the job site themselves, not allowing us to help, even though we offered."

"We had an excellent experience with ZMartin when we needed our plaster walls and ceilings to be repaired after a disastrous leak. I've had experiences with several different plasterers at this point because our house always seems to need work and we often need to go with whoever is immediately available, and I think ZMartin was the best experience in terms of quality of work and professionalism. The work was done right the first time around, they cleaned up after themselves, and they came immediately to do touch-ups when a small bubble formed a few weeks after the plaster dried (which happens sometimes). The only downside is that I've found their prices are on the higher side, but at the same time you get what you pay for. Others have done somewhat sloppy work, failed to clean up, and were often nonresponsive when touch-ups or fixes needed to be done. Just this past month, I've gotten in a bind when another plaster guy put our outlet in the wrong spot, which is creating problems for the carpentry work, and now they're not responding to my frantic message about fixing it. I was really pleased with the excellence of ZMartin's work and their responsiveness regarding any problems or expressed preferences. Brian also recommended to me a terrific painter to boot!"

Wall Repair questions, answered by experts

Each design is different, so we can’t say definitively if you’ll need a dedicated drainage system in place for a two-foot retaining wall. However, you can likely skip the drainage, as this project is typically served for walls that are 4 feet tall or more. Even with a relatively low wall, consider drainage if you are building on top of clay or poor-draining soil types or if there are buried water sources nearby, like a well used for other outdoor garden projects.

DIY is possible for small projects. Professional installation ensures structural integrity and durability for larger walls.

Poured concrete is often the cheapest material for a retaining wall, costing around $6 to $8 per square foot. Other budget-friendly options include vinyl and landscaping timbers, which range from $10 to $15 per square foot; landscaping timbers are particularly well-suited for DIY projects. Untreated timber and railroad ties are a step up in price, starting at $15 to $25 per square foot. Natural stones can also be a cost-effective choice if you can source them from your own property, but they can be expensive to purchase. High-end materials like steel are typically the most expensive but offer superior durability and aesthetics.

Yes, to build a retaining wall, a permit is required. Similarly, any repairs or modifications to an existing retaining wall require permits. If the planned wall measures higher than 4 feet, most municipalities require designs and permits come through a licensed engineer. In some locations, if the wall is shorter than 4 feet, a permit may not be required. For the requirements in your area, contact your local government.

If you don’t backfill a retaining wall—either at all or adequately enough—the wall won’t drain well, and water will be able to pass through it. Poor drainage will lead to a warped wall or a buildup of hydrostatic pressure, which can eventually collapse your retaining wall. If you have particularly sloped land, consult a structural engineer to ensure your hardscaping is adding value to your home.
