"My overall experience with Porterhouse Heating & Cooling was very good. I called and requested same-day service due to a gas leak. Porterhouse Heating & Cooling came out that day, replaced the shut-off ball valve, and tested the system after the repair was complete. Also Porterhouse Heating & Cooling ensured the tankless water heater was operable since gas to the house had been shut-off due to the gas leak. Additionally, I had them to conduct my annual preventative maintenance on both furnaces. This was my third (3rd) time using Porterhouse Heating & Cooling. I find them to be responsive, knowledgeable, and customer-focused."

"On November 15th Chicago was hit with some extreme wind gusts that caused my water heater pilot light to extinguish. I thought this was a simple reset, but the problem was more complicated. I learned the electrode was defective. Had I undertaken this project as a DIY, I would have spent more time than I would have cared to try to figure out why I could not get a flame for my water heater. I was smart to call Four Seasons. My technician figured out the problem quickly. There are times when calling a professional makes sense. I am not an expert on water heaters outside of knowing how to turn it on, clean it periodically, and knowing when I need a new one. Thank you Four Seasons for responding quickly and bringing me hot water."

"I coordinated the work with Mr. Rooter's home office. Unfortunately, they didn't relay to the technician that he needed certain materials to get the job done. This caused about a 60 minutes of extra time for the technician to search around for the part and then go pick it up. Other than that, the water heater gas control valve was successfully installed and I've got hot water again."

"Outstanding!  We had TDH replace a 20+ year conventional boiler with a high efficiency boiler/hot water heater.  We received proposals from four companies, and chose TDH because they seemed to have the best overall plan and the price was reasonable.  Every phase of the operation went smoothly.  Tim, the owner, met with us twice before we accepted the proposal.  The contract was specific in terms of the work to be done and the equipment to be installed.  The project was started on the date we had set.  The technicians spent three 10-hour days installing the unit which included three thermostats/heating zones with three circulating pumps.  The workers arrived promptly at 7a.m. each morning and were professional, polite, and efficient.  When the installation was complete, Gene and Art tested every function and checked for leaks.  They also explained how the thermostats worked and showed us how to use all the controls on the unit (shut off valves, power switches, etc.).  We also have all the instruction and installation booklets on everything that was installed.  They actually left the basement cleaner than when they had arrived.  Tim called us the day after the installation to follow up with us and gave us some tips on basic maintenance.  Overall, we are very pleased with TDH and plan to use them in the spring to install an HVAC system."

Water Heaters questions, answered by experts

If your water heater is about to celebrate the big 2-0, you may want to consider sending it off to greener pastures. While the water heater may seem to be working well, any conventional, tanked water heater over 10 years of age is at risk of failure. If your water heater is 20 years or older, your best move is to replace your aging heater before it completely breaks down.

Price variations arise from size, type (tankless or tank), efficiency grades, and installation complexity, including labor and materials.

Most standard residential water heaters, which are typically around 40 gallons and use 240 volts and between 3,500 and 5,500 watts, require a 30-amp, two-pole circuit breaker. For smaller, point-of-use water heaters using 120 volts and between 1,500 and 3,000 watts, a 30-amp breaker is also often adequate. However, some models may have different needs; units that use more watts than average may require a 40-amp breaker, while smaller units might only need a 20-amp breaker. Newer, tankless, or more energy-efficient models can also require a higher amperage. Having the correct breaker size is crucial for safe and efficient operation, so it's best to consult a licensed electrician to determine the specific needs of your water heater.

Unless you have previous plumbing experience or extensive experience with water heaters, you should avoid replacing your electric water heater yourself. This process involves disconnecting wiring and parts from the old water heater and reinstalling them onto the new one, among other difficult tasks. This job is best left to the pros to make sure that everything is connected correctly to avoid serious leaks or malfunctions.

Often, the first issue you might encounter is a lack or loss of power—this could be caused by a tripped switch or a failed heating element. If your hot water is not producing enough power and its size is not the issue, you might need to replace one of its heating elements. A leaking water heater could be caused by tank erosion.
