The service technician and his assistant were polite and wore booties. Upon a quick visual inspection he indicated that he would do rodding to clear the blockage. He spent between 5 and 10 minutes using the rodding equipment. He decided after less than 10 minutes that this approach wasn't going to work and that was all he would be able to do with the rodding. He then went back to his truck for about 20-30 minutes and then proposed to break up the concrete patio and install a new p-trap which would cost nearly $1,000 (in addition to the $349 I just paid which got me nowhere). He indicated it would also leave my patio a disaster area as they wouldn't be repairing the concrete and I'd need to find someone else to do that. I was pretty bummed and wanted to think it over.
Meanwhile I had Four Season's HVAC coming to service my air conditioner. The service technician and I started talking about the drain problem and he suggested I try their plumbing unit (which I had never used). Long story short: Four Seasons came out used the same type of rodding equipment as Mr. Rooter but they USED WATER from my garden hose in addition to the rodding machine. It took the technician about 35 minutes to clear the blockage but once he did he ran the garden hose in the drain for several minutes to show that the drain was indeed working. I was thrilled to have avoided ripping up my patio and spending a whole lot of money. Four Season's Plumbing charged me $328 for the rodding (I had a $25 coupon).
I phoned Mr. Rooter to provide feedback and to request a refund of the $349 I had paid them. It was quite clear that if the rodding had been done correctly (with adding water) and for longer than 5-10 minutes that the drain could be cleared and water would drain. I was passed around to a number of people and I had to call back repeatedly and then finally faxed a letter (detailing my experience). I promptly received voicemail from Kim the office manager who wanted to talk about it. I phoned her back the next day. She seemed to appreciate that my problem was solved by Four Seasons and that I was disappointed with my experience with Mr. Rooter. She said that in order to refund my money she wanted to send someone out with a camera to inspect the drain. While inconvenient for me to stick around for yet another appointment, I agreed. I also clarified on the phone that the refund was not contingent on some high standard (that if there was minor blockage they weren't going to try and upsell me something, etc.). She agreed that wouldn't be the case. I said that was good because I was already pretty irritated by the experience with them and just wanted my money back.
The morning of the inspection, there was a little back and forth regarding the schedule/arrival time even though I was assured I'd be the first one on the schedule. He arrived later than the dispatcher had indicated to me. He also didn't wear booties (if you listen to their hold music they play this up as something that's important to them....). Dan asked me questions about what was done when his service techs came out and then what Four Seasons had done. He explained to me that his folks shouldn't have jumped straight to the "excavation" approach (tearing up the concrete) but that they should use a high-powered water stream -- which they hadn't proposed. I clarified that Four Seasons did not use any type of high-pressure water but just used a small amount of water in connection with the rodding... and some elbow grease... Dan said he would be sure his technicians were re-trained to ensure this didn't happen again.
He took out a camera that was about the size of a 80's style microphone and tried to insert it down the drain so he could assess the situation. Needless to say the camera didn't fit down the drain. Using water from the garden hose, running for several minutes on high I showed him that the drain was indeed open enough to remove water --- which is what I use the drain for and what I wanted his company to make happen. :) He indicated that it didn't appear I'd be getting my money back.
WHAT??????????????????
He then presented me with a full-paged typed letter from Kim the Office Manager that said if they couldn't use the cam I wouldn't get my money. I would've appreciated getting that letter in advance so that I knew what they were trying to pull... He wanted me to sign the letter saying a "good faith attempt was made...." and acknowledge that I wouldn't be eligible for a refund. I refused to sign the letter but wanted to take one of the two copies of it. He said I couldn't have it unless I signed it right then and there. What is this a Used Car dealership????? He said he would pass along my lack of satisfaction to Kim. I haven't heard from Kim....
Kim was in a position to neutralize my bad experience with Mr. Rooter by listening to my story and giving my money back as I received no value from their 10 minute service call. What Kim did instead was antagonize me and waste even more of my time.
I highly suggest you avoid using Mr. Rooter.
Mr. Rooter guy came with a helper was very nice to talk and did all the service to power rod and camera inspection for the main swer line on first vist from the furthest stack with Guarantee for next 6 months with multiple visits. He assured me at 90 ft he reached the city sewer line thru camera (which after months I realized he was still in bldg and main sewer line for city was atleast 110 ft away). He gave in writing everything was fine and no issues. This WRONG caust me thousands of money and mental hardhsip as the problem that could have been identified that day took an extra 3 more months and due to bad weather nothing could be fixed.
In 3 weeks water was back in basement and after a few follow up he came on a time I was not there rodded from outside and water did reced. Again after 4 weeks same thing happened and I said he needs to come only when I am there and redo the camera from catch basin which he ignored the first visit an did not put in. I do not want to say any more negative about him as I later learnt that he died due a snow storm accident in Chicago and thus never returned my call for weeks.
I followed with corporate for weeks after that as I had paid a decent amount of money and wanted them to keep the promise and solve the issue. Corporate told me that every Mr. Rooter is different then it should not be called plain Mr. Rooter it should have a different name and clients should be clearly informed about no backup form corporate. Its just pure cheating and stealing money by doing that. After multiple follow up corporate agreed to send schaumburg mr rooter but then when they came he was asking for the full price again which I refused to pay.
Lesson Learnt: Need to make sure corporate is going to back up or not. if its just an individual guy using a good name then what is the point of paying extra for that name? I give a Complete F to Mr. Rooter overall handling this situation. Was nice above giving a D.
I rent so I kept waiting to hear from my landlord (no call back) so I sent him away and told him I'd call back with my decision, before even calling Mr. Rooter I had waited a day to hear from my landlord and NO luck, so I didn't want to wait any longer. I made the decision myself! He wasn't even gone 30 minutes I called him back to replace it. He showed right back up, we chose a toilet- I went with the most basic white toilet and he went out and bought it. Installation went fast, when he was done he went thru the whole house and did a free inspection of all plumbing. I was very happy with my service call and my son was happy too cause Manny so nicely gave him 4 magnets to keep!
The service person showed up and within 5 minutes said that he needed a part. Unlike their usual practice, he did not provide a price estimate. He left and returned within the hour. I noticed that he double parked outside. Again he replaced the component on the sink within approximately 5 minutes and charged almost $200.00. Obviously he was in a hurry again becuase he double parked.
Rather than complain to the service person we followed up the next day and left a message that we were disappointed in the service (it looked like there was still a leak) and complained about the price. We also wrote a review when we received a feedback form from Mr. Rooter.
No one from Mr. Rooter bothered to follow-up with us on this disappointing experience.
This ridiculously inflated price did not solve the original problem. The flooding issue recurred a few days after Mr. Rooter left the site. At that point, we called the village of Streamwood Public Works Dept. They came out promptly. They were appalled by the project price paid and the amount of disruption done to the front yard (images available). Mr. Rooter's workers left a raggedy mound of dirt 4' wide and more than 2' high the entire width of the front yard to the sidewalk which they also tore up.
The Public Works guy ("JB") used the village's camera to assess and confirm the problem himself. They said a blockage remained and that it could be removed by jetting it out. JB called Mr. Rooter and insisted they return to the site to meet with him.
At that subsequent meeting, JB told Mr. Rooter's guy that they must jet out the blockage and complete the work at no extra cost to the owner or face potential loss of their bond with the village.
Under duress, Mr. Rooter then jetted out the blockage- problem miraculously solved!
Two other plumbers and the Streamwood Public Works guy said the job should not have cost more than $4,000. One of Mr. Rooter's laborers who had been sent back to deal with our complaint about the massive mound of dirt, confided that he knew the sales guy had intentionally misrepresented the scope and cost of the job.
I have filed a BBB complaint as well as a formal complaint with the Illinois Attorney General. Next is Pam Zeckman of WBBM TV in Chicago and a law suit . I sent letters of complaint to Mr. Rooter's Schaumburg office and to Mr. Rooter's corporate office in Waco TX- no answer (big surprise).
I've place approx. 8 phone calls since then. Each time, I'm told someone will get back to me. On August 27, 2010, I was told they were mailing a check for the over charges. I never received the check. On January 17, 2011, I was told there was a new owner and someone would get back to me. I'm still waiting for that phone call.
In addition to the charges, the work was sloppy. The workers had to break the concrete on the side of my house to repair the pipe. The finished work is not level. I now have water puddles in that area whenever it rains. (I didn't have puddles before).
