The average life span of an HVAC system is 15 to 20 years. Even if your old air conditioner is still functional, it isn't as energy-efficient as a newer system (especially one with an Energy Star designation). Older HVAC systems aren't as efficient, and the 10-year mark is when you should start making full system replacement plans. You can convert a gas heater to electric, but it isn’t as simple as swapping a plug or two. Make sure you don’t also need a permit for an electric water heater—some cities require it. Making the switch can cost upwards of $1,500.

Natural gas and electricity rates vary significantly based on location, and pricing can change over time, too. It’s possible that in locations where natural gas is particularly inexpensive, it will cost less than grid-based electricity will. However, you should also factor in the generator’s initial costs and maintenance needs, as well as its noise level and if it can comfortably power all your home appliances.

There are a few factors to consider if you’re deciding between repairing and replacing your air conditioner. It’s probably worth fixing the AC unit if it’s less than 10 years old, you’re dealing with a one-off issue, and your warranty or maintenance plan will cover the repairs. On the other hand, if your air conditioner is dated, inefficient, out of warranty, and experiencing multiple problems, consider replacing it.

It’s not necessary to tip appliance installers, but it is a nice gesture to show your appreciation for their hard work. It’s especially a good idea if your team has to haul your appliance up stairs or through tight areas and around corners without damaging your home. Tipping each installation team member between $10 and $15 is a great way to thank them for a job well done.
