"Brian S did a great job diagnosing issues with my water heater. He was able to schedule one of their plumbers to come out and install a new water heater the next day. I would highly recommend Perma Seal for any future waterproofing and plumbing needs."

"I had Ken and his crew come out in Dec. 2019 to install a new shower and replace two sink faucets in our primary bathroom. They did a great job. We did need a little warranty work done recently and they sent out a service technician who did what we asked courteously and professionally. I love a company that stands behind their work and Prime Baths in Coal City does just that. Will use them again as needed for sure."

Affordable Plumbers questions, answered by experts

The average lifespan of plumbing ranges from 20 to 100 years, primarily determined by the pipe material. For example, PEX piping can last 80 to 100 years, while copper and cast iron pipes have a lifespan of 50 to 100 years. Other materials like CPVC, brass, and steel typically last between 50 and 70 years, and galvanized steel pipes have a shorter lifespan of up to 50 years. The longevity of any pipe material is also affected by factors like soil acidity, extreme temperatures, and proper maintenance, which is crucial for ensuring a long service life.

No, you typically cannot use metal detectors to find your sewer line. Most sewer lines are made of non-metallic materials such as PVC, clay, or cast iron, which are not detectable by standard metal detectors. Metal detectors are designed to locate metallic objects, so they won't be effective for identifying the path of a non-metallic sewer line. To locate your sewer line accurately, it's best to use other methods.

Yes, you can technically use a utility knife or straight blade to cut through PEX pipe. However, this isn't an ideal method simply because you won't get the same clean cut that you'll get with a pipe cutter. A utility knife will likely create angles that weaken your push connections. If you use a utility knife, score the pipe with the knife along your marked line several times before making your final cut.

The plumbing industry has standardized the sizes for bathtub drains. They are 1 1/2 inches wide to fit all standard bathtubs from 14 to 26 inches deep. The standard sizing is to ensure that the drain fits into the P trap, a special part of your piping that prevents sewer water from bubbling up into your home (yuck).

Start by inspecting visible pipes for signs of corrosion, moisture, or discoloration, which can indicate a leak. You should also listen for sounds like hissing or dripping, which may point you toward a leak. Moisture meters and infrared cameras can also help you identify areas of increased moisture around your home, which can also signify a leak.
