Robert F. Schwake began delivering stones in 1946, and with that first delivery, a tradition of quality, service and satisfaction was set into motion that we still value today - almost 70 years later. As the company grew and our reputation expanded, we began receiving requests for a more diversified product selection. In the 1960s we acquired additional yard space to accommodate more stone products, and the addition of saws to custom cut limestone on-site. Today that tradition of excellence continues. With a combined total of well over 200 years of experience in the industry, our employees bring expert knowledge and experience to every customer. Our Mundelein, Illinois location has a 20,000 square feet indoor showroom and a paved 7 acre outside display yard featuring over 100 varieties of building stone, 40 types of landscaping gravel and sand, landscape boulders, outcroppings, flagstone, marble and granite. While we have expanded our product offerings and services over the years, one thing that hasn't changed is our commitment to quality, service and satisfaction. One of largest expansion areas is our fireplace department. We carry a huge selection of indoor and outdoor fireplaces - wood-burning and gas-burning types in numerous configurations. We have over 30 fireplaces on display and all are fully functional so they can be seen in operation live in our showroom. We also carry a large assortment of fireplace accessories from doors, screens, brushes & stokers to various types of media such as fire glass and our newest introduction - a natural volcanic rock product for uses in fireplaces and fire pits. Schwake Stone is proud to be a member of the following associations: • Better Business Bureau Accredited with an A+ rating • Women's Business Enterprise National Council as a woman-owned business • Illinois Landscape Association • Illinois Parks & Recreation Association • Masonry Contractors Association • Federation of Women Contractors • International Interior Design Association • Architectural Stone Institute • Indiana Limestone Institute • Building Stone Institute

"I can't say enough good things about Windy City Fireplace. From the moment my wife and I walked in the door, Roger was absolutely incredible to work with. Knowledgeable, insightful but most importantly, not pushy at all. He knows his stuff and he truly went above and beyond to help us with our purchase of not only our fireplace doors but also our brick veneers. After our new fireplace doors were delivered and installed I immediately noticed that they seemed to be out of alignment. Roger personally made multiple early Saturday-morning trips to our house to diagnose the issue and he ultimately felt the best course of action was to replace the faulty doors through the manufacturer. Most places will do everything they can to avoid this drastic course of action because it's a hassle but Roger knew this was the best solution and there was no questions asked. After the replacement doors came in, Roger personally installed the doors himself and was even kind enough to leave me with a few spare veneers I had requested, "just in case". Long story short, there are numerous fireplace stores in the northern suburbs but hands down, this was a great experience from start to finish."

Patios questions, answered by experts

The average ROI you’ll see from a deck or a concrete patio is 70%, so from a value-add perspective, they’re about the same. However, decks are around double the price of a concrete patio, they require significantly more maintenance, and they have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years, about half of what you’d see from a concrete patio. As such, a concrete patio is a better option in terms of up-front cost, long-term maintenance, and ROI.

The short answer is that the cost to build a staircase largely depends on what material they’re made out of and how many you need. Wood stairs cost about $50 to $100 per step for materials alone, while labor costs an additional $100 to $250 per step. The cost increases for more expensive materials such as glass or concrete.

Concrete contractors typically charge anywhere from $6 to $14 per square foot. Cost factors include job size, site prep, base material, accessibility, your location, concrete finish, and concrete thickness. Removal of existing concrete, asphalt, deck, pavers, and grass will cost anywhere from $1 to $6 per square foot. Homeowners can often save money by removing and disposing of existing pavers, decks, and grass. Breaking up and hauling away concrete and asphalt is difficult and time-consuming without the proper equipment and may be worth having the pros do that work.

To build a patio with a built-in fire pit, expect to pay an average of $6,750. The cost to build a patio alone is an average of $3,500. Although the cost of construction is higher, the patio and fire pit combination offers a better resale value than a patio alone or a patio with a fire pit add-on.

No, a deck is more expensive than a concrete patio. The cost to build a deck is between $4,200 and $11,700, or about $7,900 on average. This makes the average deck cost roughly twice as much as the average cost to build a concrete patio. Concrete patios also have far greater longevity and are easier to maintain.
