SCHWAKE STONE BRICK & FIREPLACE CO

About us

Robert F. Schwake began delivering stones in 1946, and with that first delivery, a tradition of quality, service and satisfaction was set into motion that we still value today - almost 70 years later. As the company grew and our reputation expanded, we began receiving requests for a more diversified product selection. In the 1960s we acquired additional yard space to accommodate more stone products, and the addition of saws to custom cut limestone on-site. Today that tradition of excellence continues. With a combined total of well over 200 years of experience in the industry, our employees bring expert knowledge and experience to every customer. Our Mundelein, Illinois location has a 20,000 square feet indoor showroom and a paved 7 acre outside display yard featuring over 100 varieties of building stone, 40 types of landscaping gravel and sand, landscape boulders, outcroppings, flagstone, marble and granite. While we have expanded our product offerings and services over the years, one thing that hasn't changed is our commitment to quality, service and satisfaction. One of largest expansion areas is our fireplace department. We carry a huge selection of indoor and outdoor fireplaces - wood-burning and gas-burning types in numerous configurations. We have over 30 fireplaces on display and all are fully functional so they can be seen in operation live in our showroom. We also carry a large assortment of fireplace accessories from doors, screens, brushes & stokers to various types of media such as fire glass and our newest introduction - a natural volcanic rock product for uses in fireplaces and fire pits. Schwake Stone is proud to be a member of the following associations: • Better Business Bureau Accredited with an A+ rating • Women's Business Enterprise National Council as a woman-owned business • Illinois Landscape Association • Illinois Parks & Recreation Association • Masonry Contractors Association • Federation of Women Contractors • International Interior Design Association • Architectural Stone Institute • Indiana Limestone Institute • Building Stone Institute

I can't say enough good things about Windy City Fireplace. From the moment my wife and I walked in the door, Roger was absolutely incredible to work with. Knowledgeable, insightful but most importantly, not pushy at all. He knows his stuff and he truly went above and beyond to help us with our purchase of not only our fireplace doors but also our brick veneers. After our new fireplace doors were delivered and installed I immediately noticed that they seemed to be out of alignment. Roger personally made multiple early Saturday-morning trips to our house to diagnose the issue and he ultimately felt the best course of action was to replace the faulty doors through the manufacturer. Most places will do everything they can to avoid this drastic course of action because it's a hassle but Roger knew this was the best solution and there was no questions asked. After the replacement doors came in, Roger personally installed the doors himself and was even kind enough to leave me with a few spare veneers I had requested, "just in case". Long story short, there are numerous fireplace stores in the northern suburbs but hands down, this was a great experience from start to finish.

For starters, this is now Windy City Fireplace, restructured part of Schwake. In same location, but apparently company restructured. Angies List did not let me enter it as I wanted to. Project went well from start to finish. Showroom has an amazing variety of stone, well displayed. Robert Greene helped me with selection and pricing. Ordered a beautiful stone veneer and limestone hearth to go over my existing painted brick fireplace. Roger coordinated everything well. Scheduled installation was scheduled for two days, Friday and Saturday. Easier on me, so I only had to take 1 day off work. Masons who came were a father and son. Multi-generation of bricklayers, which is exactly what I wanted. They did a great job of restoring the fireplace and taking out the older gas line. I highly recommend this company for anyone who wants to do a fireplace. Whether its a restoration or new one.

I had found a limestone mantel on Houzz that once I saw it nothing else was going to work. After calling multiple people no one could figure out how to do it. Roger Greene nailed it. I was spot on. He was able to give me exactly what I wanted and it turned out great.

They just provided the stone and Northwest Metalcraft used it for the fireplace. I have no complaints. We've used them for our patio and another company is using them for the base of our window.

I told the store I wanted the best stone person to do the job no matter how long I had to wait.  They assured me I would get the best.  The day scheduled 5 people showed up to do the fireplaces.  It was a surprise since we only expected the one person.  He left for a long time to go get mortar etc.

Problems

As they finished the upstairs fireplace they dropped mortar on the hearth and stained it.  I was asked to try and clean it.  The main contractor came out and sanded and tried to fix it.  It only looked worse.  Store ordered new stone for hearth.

When they installed the new hearth they broke front of one of the stones and said nothing.

Fireplace number two

They used the wrong mortar.  I told them it was wrong and they assured me it would dry the right color.  It was purple when wet and changed to lavender when dry??

They left mortar on the ceilings and walls and even the stone had globs stuck on it.  I had to refinish my new cherry mantel.

They left a hole in the back of the fireplace that probably would have caused a fire,

The people at the store were nice but no one ever offered to come out and see the problems or call to see if they had been corrected.

We spent another $600 and had someone paint the mortar the correct color.

I have done business with this company for many years but would not recommend them for any construction work.  It has been 5 months and no one has checked to see if we are satisfied.

The poor workmanship unfortunately was their responsibility.
