Robert F. Schwake began delivering stones in 1946, and with that first delivery, a tradition of quality, service and satisfaction was set into motion that we still value today - almost 70 years later. As the company grew and our reputation expanded, we began receiving requests for a more diversified product selection. In the 1960s we acquired additional yard space to accommodate more stone products, and the addition of saws to custom cut limestone on-site. Today that tradition of excellence continues. With a combined total of well over 200 years of experience in the industry, our employees bring expert knowledge and experience to every customer. Our Mundelein, Illinois location has a 20,000 square feet indoor showroom and a paved 7 acre outside display yard featuring over 100 varieties of building stone, 40 types of landscaping gravel and sand, landscape boulders, outcroppings, flagstone, marble and granite. While we have expanded our product offerings and services over the years, one thing that hasn't changed is our commitment to quality, service and satisfaction. One of largest expansion areas is our fireplace department. We carry a huge selection of indoor and outdoor fireplaces - wood-burning and gas-burning types in numerous configurations. We have over 30 fireplaces on display and all are fully functional so they can be seen in operation live in our showroom. We also carry a large assortment of fireplace accessories from doors, screens, brushes & stokers to various types of media such as fire glass and our newest introduction - a natural volcanic rock product for uses in fireplaces and fire pits. I told the store I wanted the best stone person to do the job no matter how long I had to wait. They assured me I would get the best. The day scheduled 5 people showed up to do the fireplaces. It was a surprise since we only expected the one person. He left for a long time to go get mortar etc.
Problems
As they finished the upstairs fireplace they dropped mortar on the hearth and stained it. I was asked to try and clean it. The main contractor came out and sanded and tried to fix it. It only looked worse. Store ordered new stone for hearth.
When they installed the new hearth they broke front of one of the stones and said nothing.
Fireplace number two
They used the wrong mortar. I told them it was wrong and they assured me it would dry the right color. It was purple when wet and changed to lavender when dry??
They left mortar on the ceilings and walls and even the stone had globs stuck on it. I had to refinish my new cherry mantel.
They left a hole in the back of the fireplace that probably would have caused a fire,
The people at the store were nice but no one ever offered to come out and see the problems or call to see if they had been corrected.
We spent another $600 and had someone paint the mortar the correct color.
I have done business with this company for many years but would not recommend them for any construction work. It has been 5 months and no one has checked to see if we are satisfied.
The poor workmanship unfortunately was their responsibility.
