I left a message and Chris called me back when the business opened for the day. I decided to go with another 40 gallon heater and we set up an appointment for 1pm today. About 1:10p Chis called to let me know his current job was running long and it would be about another 30 minutes -- I told him it was OK and to take his time. Chis and Phillip arrived and promptly started working. It took less than two hours and they were both very pleasant and professional. Phillip even changed out my washer hoses (that I already had) while Chris was finishing. Chris then explained the water heater features and warranty to me -- plus the cost was less than I expected (deal showed $775 but I was only charged $715 -- plus wasn't charged to change the washer hoses). I would highly recommend Redbird Plumbing!!

He checked the heater and determined it was going to need several parts. He suggested that we get estimate for cost of parts and since the heater is so old parts may be unavailable and/or very expensive. It may be cheaper to get a new unit. He went back to the office and a couple of hours later they called and said the parts would probably be at least $200 and we can get a new unit for that price. She is researching where I can get a new one and will call me. Once she finds one she'll let me know and they will even pick it up and bring it to install. The technician is very knowledgeable and progessional and personable. He has done work for me before and always goes out ogf his way to help. Like this time, opening heat vents that I didn't know were closed. I highly recommend SBC Heating andf Air Conditioning. And one other word the secretary, Jenny, is always very pleasant and always willing to help. It's great to call a business and get a and quot;liveand quot; person and one who is unfailing polite and pleasant and helpful. And they ALWAYS call me back when they say they will.

The always do it by the book. Double checking oil level shouting out light check etc. Pretty minimal pressure to up-sell you unneeded services - unlike some other quick lube places I have used.
I used to do my own oil changes so I do double check their work - never found a problem or a grease fitting missed.
One time I had to wait about 20 minutes. I mentioned that I was bit disappointed by that. The guy running the till apologized and told me that yes, they do sometimes get lines on Mondays and Fridays. Since then I have always gone on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday and have never had to wait in line.

I chose D &R because they carried the brand of water heater I wanted, Bradford White. I decided to remove the old water heater before they arrived so I could clean up the rust and debris under and around the old water heater. When D & R arrived, they had a clean work area to work in to install the new water heater. The technicians were courteous and polite and brought in the new water heater without incident.
Here are my observations.
When they installed the new water heater, the existing cold water pipe was approximately 1/2 inch too long to fit the new water heater. Rather than shorten the pipe by 1/2", the technician tried to make up the distance by screwing the pipe coupling on the water heater down as far it would go. This required a significant amount of force. Ultimately, he could not screw the pipe coupling down far enough to make up the needed distance so he had to so he had to shorten (cut) the water pipe after all. My concern is that he used so much force trying to screw on the pipe coupling on the water heater, that he may have over-stressed the internal parts and ultimately shortening it's life or voiding the warranty.
There are a couple serious life safety issues with D&R Plumbing's installation too. The water heater's exhaust vent is shared with HVAC. When D&R installed the vent pipe, they did not secure it to the water heater with screws. The vibration from the HVAC transmitted through the vent pipe and caused the water heater's vent pipe to slip off so the exhaust gasses from the water heater were venting directly into the house. This is a serious life safety issue. If they had secured (screwed) the vent pipe to the top of the water heater, this would not have happened. Also, when the plumber attached the gas line to the new water heater, he checked for gas leaks by sniffing the connection. I don't believe sniffing a gas connection is a recognized safety procedure to test for a gas leak?
If you use this company, make sure you watch everything they do to assure your installation is appropriate and safe.
Addendum: The company has not contacted me regarding the flue pipe as they said they would in their response.

To buy heating oil for your house, contact local heating oil companies to compare prices and place an order once you decide on a supplier. The company will have to deliver your heating oil in a truck designed to carry and dispense heating oil safely. Call and order your heating oil early enough to have your oil delivered before you need to start using it for home heating.
On average, you’ll need about two gallons of oil per day to heat your house when it’s 50 degrees Fahrenheit outside. Most oil tank capacity is about 275 gallons, and heating your house with two gallons of oil per day will last about four and a half months. This consumption will vary depending on the climate and average temperature in your location. For example, if the winters are longer and colder where you live, you’ll probably need to refill your oil tank at least once to get through the winter.
You save money on heating oil in a few ways:
Make sure your home is well insulated and sealed against drafts and heat leakage.
Use a thermostat that’s working properly and calibrated accurately.
Increase energy efficiency by insulating your basement and attic.
Turn down your thermostat a few degrees.
Program your thermostat to lower the heat when you’re not home.
Order heating oil during the off-season when prices are likely to be lower.
Summer months tend to be when heating oil prices are lowest because of decreased demand. Buying heating oil during the off-season also prepares you for when the weather gets cold, and you need to start using the oil to heat your home. Although heating oil prices will fluctuate, it’s best to avoid purchasing between September and April, as that's the peak season for heating oil demand.
Overall, heating your home with an oil furnace tends to be less expensive than heating your home with an electric heating system. Oil heating systems stay warm for longer periods of time without drawing a constant electrical current to maintain a temperature. Plus, heating oil systems typically have a longer lifespan and lower price tag than their electrical counterparts, resulting in short- and long-term savings.
