Sheet vinyl is the cheapest DIY flooring, depending on the brand, style, and quality you choose. It is normal to glue carpet down, though it’s not the only or the most popular method of installing carpet. Modern techniques include tack strips and stretching the carpet, but you might still find glued carpet in older homes or a home with a DIY’d past. Removing a glued-down carpet will be harder compared to other methods of installation.

Door transitions can work with virtually any flooring type; however, different transition strips lend themselves better to specific flooring types. For instance, if you are bridging the gap between a taller floor, like carpet, to a shorter floor, like hardwood, then you will want a transition strip with a slight slope to bridge the height difference. These transition strips are called reducer molding. On the other hand, if you are bridging two floors of the same height, you can use flat transition strips, such as T-strips and seam binders.

It depends on the kind you choose, but some types of carpet padding can last for decades. For instance, flat rubber—which is dense, durable, and higher-priced than other padding materials—has a life span of up to 20 years. On the other hand, prime foam—a lower-priced material that often comes free with a carpet installation—lasts less than five years on average.
